MartinI was amazed to hear from you Martin. I do
remember you very well. I remember my Graeme
years very fondly and all the characters that
made it so memorable. I can hardly believe that
Ernie Hobbs is still alive. While I was at
medical school at Stellenbosch I used to visit
him regularly. You almost have me placed but I am
a little further South than Kuwait. I am a
consultant pediatric cardiologist in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia at the King Abdulaziz cardiac
center. My children have all left home and my
wife and I are dodging the missiles in this part
of the desert. Unfortunately circumstances do not
allow me to come although I would dearly have
wanted to come. My colleague, Mike Godman will be
away in Scotland and I will be holding the fort
here till the 2oth March. I hope it is very
successful and will post a photo on the website
and will follow the news avidly. Kind regards to
all the classmatesJan du Plessis 24th Feb

- Dear Martin, Please not the dreaded detention!!!.
- Thanks for the effort you are putting into making
the reunion a success. Regrettable circumstances
are such that I will not be able to join you guys
in G'town next month - it sounds like it will be
a blast. I will enjoy reading about it on your
excellent web site and seeing faces attached to
names remembered from 40 yeas ago. - I live in Pietermaritzburg where I am curator of
the Natal National Botanical gardens, am married
with 3 kids and ride a mountain bike for fun. - cheers,

MartinHi. Yes I'm still around and been
reading correspondence with interest. I am amazed
you managed to track me down as there are not too
many Old Boys in these parts. In fact the only
Old Boy that I know is my next door neighbour in
Kloof, Mike Amm, Kingsley's brother. Obviously
events are just around the corner as you are
already talking about photo shoots. It's doubtful
I will be able to make it but if possible please
let me know all details, you never know. Where's
Duncan Sangster these days. Is he still in
London? I used to see his brother Bev quite often
when he was still staying in Durban. You boys
have obviously done a grand job rounding up the
bunch of old renegades. Well done for all the
work you have put into it and if I don't see you
at the get together perhaps some time in the
future a few of the lads may be able to get
together down your way and chew the fat over a
couple of Klippies and Coke! Regards and thanks
very much for remembering me.Des 18th Feb
2004 - Duncan Sangster - d.sangster_at_btclick.com Dear
Martin, - As requested I attach a recent photo of my wife,
Patti, and I taken in San Francisco which I guess
will give the others an idea as how I have aged.
I look forward to seeing photos of you all at the
reunion. Kind regards - Duncan 17th Feb 2004

Hi there Marty - Great idea why not take it at the braai on
Sat I think most of us will be there catching
up nursing hangovers and watching cricket - 12.30 should be a good time. Regards

20Duncan Sangster - d.sangster_at_btclick.com Dear
Martin,I believe his name is (was) Peter. I
think I remember as the little twit caught me
smoking in the bunker at Grant House one morning
before school, which got me expelled from the
boarding school. Roy has no doubt told you that
as much as I would enjoy being there, it just
won't be possible. A great pity as looking at
your web site has brought back many memories and
being there would no doubt bring back many more.
I am sure that it will be great fun.Kind

Martin - pwmartin_at_iinet.net.au G'day Martin - A
blast from the past. Molly Moore's christian
name is Peter. I was the last matric boy in our
class to be caned before we left school to write
matric. Molly was the culprit - he caned me for
talking to Royden. I'm going to try my hardest to
make the reunion but it will depend upon how the
work goes. I have my own accounting practice in
Perth, Western Australia. Unfortunately for me
mid to end March are deadlines for Companies to
lodge their income tax returns. Good to hear the
news. The only person I recognise in that
photograph you posted is yourself - but only
after a long, hard look. The other guy is sort of
familiar but cannot place him at all. Kind
regards Peter 10 Feb 2004

21- Howson Gush - fincontroller_at_prosec.com.pg Hi
MartinI was reminiscing this past weekend with a
fellow employee from East London (Geoff
Preston-Thomas ex Border no. 8 that some may
remember from 1962 Selborne) and I had the slow
brainwave to do a google search on Graeme
College, and up popped your web page, so here I
am.I was interested to see the names of the 1964
class, although being 2 years behind I played
rugby in the 2nds with a lot of the guys that
year, including our captain, Bree (Barry Reid)
he and I had the hardest beards in Grant House. I
had lunch in Perth with Peter Martin (Muddle)
about 6 or 7 years ago, and played a game of
cricket against Royden and Afrox, as a guest of
Stellenbosch Farmers Wineries in about 1978. I
seem to think that after a bottle of wine he
bowled me 2nd ball! I also ran into Don Futter in
Harare not long before that as well. I stayed at
Peter Tudges Cockhouse in February last year
where he had done a marvellous job, and was
shocked to see you comment about him passing on.
My Gran used to rent the dining room and a couple
of other rooms in that house as a flat about 45
years ago, so it was strange having a meal in her
old bedroom! As for Martin Kruger what stands
out in my memory is you getting into trouble for
shouting Vrystaat in the double-decker bus on
the way to the Boet Erasmus stadium to watch the
Boks thrash the Wallabies in 1963. As for me, a
quick précis is that I did a degree at
Stellenbosch, then did a CA, took Tony Perrys
place in the accounting practice with James
Brandt (he might still be Honorary Auditor of the
Old Boys Union Peter Martin Caveman Kretzmann
were other old boys employed by us at the time),
was Vice-President of the Old Boys Union for a
while (Gav Reid was President, Roy Simpson was
Head master), helped give the Clubhouse its first
coat of paint, did not like PWs Rubicon speech
so emigrated to Australia with my 2nd wife and
our kids in 1986, where we now have 4 grandsons.
We have been in Papua New Guinea for 3 years and
will be returning to Brisbane next month have
had enough of 3rd world countries (you think SA
has a security problem?) Now that I have some
addresses I will try and find time on my next
visit to see if a couple of us can recognize each
other. If you hear of any of the 66 class (Kevin
Heany?) planning to arrange a reunion in 2006
please pass my name on. Regards Howson Gush

23Letter from Jan du Plessis
- Dear fellow Graemians
- Who would have thought that 40 years after matric
most of us have managed to survive and even
thrive? To me, my youth was idyllic and
especially the time at Graeme. All the eccentric
people I met still live on. Stompie Kinghorns
steel-studded shoe steps echo in my mind. The
match when the Grahamstown schools rugby team,
who did not include one Craven week EP member,
defeated the EP Craven week team is still a story
I love to tell. What a day that was with each
player a hero. When I hear the song about making
those blue jeans talk I always think of the
ladies of the teachers training college rank
swaying past in their blue jeans. I remember
Dentons famous He must have rocks in his head
remark! for which he was martyred. - Our family is deeply grateful for the acceptance
we found as Afrikaners at Graeme, although Royden
always said I had been thoroughly detribalized. - The education we had was second to none. I have
been privileged to work in the Middle East with
specialists from the US, UK and many European
countries. Although I do not want to promote
myself, my education for which the foundation was
laid at Graeme was never inferior and I could
deal with them as equals and sometimes as more
than equal. My general knowledge and basic level
of education often astonished them. - When I came to choose schools for my own
children, I had to consider what factors were
important in a school. I realized how fortunate
we were. We had so many dedicated teachers who
were professional teachers and willing to go the
extra mile. Mr. Hobbs who is at this reunion was
certainly one of them. Baie groete Mnr Hobbs en
baie dankie We had a disciplined environment.
Today drugs, thuggery or worse seems almost to
have become the norm. This interferes with
learning as the teaching staff have to waste
their time on all these problems to the detriment
of learning. In our day the worst crime was
smoking the odd cigarette. Respect for authority
was a rule at Graeme but this is also a
disappearing attribute in our world. The
integration of sport into education was a proud
facet of a Graemian education which is being
discovered to be important because of the
epidemic of obesity in children in the West. The
Graeme we attended had all these good
characteristics and I hope the new school has
continued the tradition. - I am sorry that I cannot be there. I hope the
reunion is a success and I wish each of you
health and happiness till the next reunion. I
envy you recounting all the old stories and the
fun. I especially will miss seeing Royden with
whom I share many memories after leaving school.
Lastly a warning. Please do not believe all
Chapmans stories! - Till we meet again
- May God hold you in the palm of his hand.
- Riyadh
24Sincere thanks
- To everybody who made it back to Grahamstown from
1964 to March 2004. - To Glad Morton who ensured that our respected
teacher, associate and, may we now say, friend
and peerMr. ERNIE HOBBS is able to join us.
Dankie Meneer. - To Don Munday, our teacher and respected friend,
a great thank you.
See you all in 2044
