OMC
  • On January 2005 came into force the WTO's
Agreement on Textiles and Clothing and the quotas
system expired, leaving the European textile
    sector in a vulnerable position.
  • The new state of the art, of the textile sector,
has had some negative consequences for the
European industries based on a competitiveness
    cost related loss.
  • OPEN MARKET PRICE
  • The countries with minor costs of production
rapidly consolidated their dominant position, and
those SMEs- with serious problems of
competitiveness - and the big industries took
their production to these countries in order to
    be more competitive.
  • LOW COST PRODUCING COUNTRIES CONSOLIDATE

4
SPANISH -INNOTEX
  • One of the major changes experienced by the
sector has been the linear break of the value
    chain, specially regarding location issues.
  • PREPRODUCTION PRODUCTION TRADING
  • The unfavourable consequences for the clothes
making SMEs have been associated with
    competitiveness, productivity and employment
    losses.
  • COMPETITIVENESS PRODUCTION
    EMPLOYMENT

6
PRODUCTIVITY AND PRICE
  • Although the productive phase has its maximum
differential value in the price, the phase of
previous creation, or preproduction phase has the
principal solution for the competitiveness loss
of the industry since it is in this phase where
the product added value is created.
  • It is in this creation phase where most of the
industry efforts have been centered to solve the
    crisis situation.
  • FUTURE ACTIONS R D I

7
TECNICAL TEXTILE
  • The technical textiles are products whose
competitiveness factor is not cost related (as it
happens with the majority of dressing products),
it is based on the innovation, more precisely on
    the RDI.
  • The technical textiles need a bigger research
effort, a bigger technical specialization, and,
therefore, they have a bigger differentiation
potential and value added generation than
    traditional textiles.
  • NEW BUSINESSES MORE SPECIALIZED MORE
    COMPETITIVE

8
SPAIN
  • Trends of the traditional manufacturing
    industries are focused on
  • Clothtech
  • Medtech
  • Protech
  • Sporttech
  • Consequence Necessity of collaboration with
    Technological Centres and Universities
  • Some examples of Spanish Technological Centres
    are CETEMMSA (Cataluña), AITEX (Valencia),
AITAT, ITA (Aragón), FITEX (Extremadura), LEITAT
    (Cataluña).

STATE OF THE ART - 2007
  • The recovery of the Spanish exports, initiated
in 2006, has continued during the year on the
basis of the good European conjuncture, both of
final consumption and of industrial demand, since
the EU represents 2/3 of our exports.
  • Exports have increased 6,2, specially home
textiles, carpets, coatings and chemical fibers,
though the dressing clothes are the principal
exported product (55 of the total).
  • The exportation of threads and fabrics has been
    kept stable.

12
  • The Spanish IMPORTS have grown globally 8,5 in
value. Products of final use continue being the
most imported (3/4 of the whole) and those who
    experience a major growth (11 ).
  • The evolution of the exports has allowed a
certain containment of the TRADE DEFICIT placed
on 5.560 millions (12 ), while the COVER RATE
( of M that can be paid with the X on a specific
time frame) has been 58,4 , one point lower to
    that of the previous year.

13
  • The exports forecasts are in these moments very
uncertain. Since they are linked to the intensity
of the deceleration of the economic growth in
    Europe, our principal market.
  • The export figures of the last months of the year
show negative growth rates, possibly due to more
moderate levels of the foreign demand.
