Title: An Example of Globalisation

1
An Example of Globalisation Collaboration
between Luleå University of Technology in Sweden
and Monash University The International
University in Australia, Malaysia, South Africa

2
Sir John Monash (1865 - 1931) "Adopt as your
fundamental creed that you will equip yourself
for life, not solely for your own benefit but
for the benefit of the whole community." - Sir
John Monash The Universitys motto Ancora
Imparo Italian for "I am still learning",
is a fitting description
of this great Australian.

Project overview (cont.)
  • 2003
  • More exchange in teaching and research in
    Computer Communication, Music and Music
    Education....
  • Five of the Deans from LTU visiting Monash in
    February
  • Renewal of the 1998 LTU-Monash agreement. Now the
agreement will cover student exchange, academic
    and teaching collaboration, collaboration between
study programs and deeper collaboration in
    graduate education
  • Tony Pollock from Monash International visits LTU
    in May

9
Four important ingredients
  • Personal connection between staff of the two
  • universities - Now we have a nice NETWORK
  • at both ends
  • Seed funding from two Swedish funding bodies
  • (The Swedish Council for Undergraduate
    Education and STINT)
  • (LTU - pays some administration during 2001,
    2002 and (?) 2003)
  • Development of complementary teaching areas
  • Development of joint research strength

10
Staff exchange in teaching

Eigth Swedish academics for a full Semester-
each in five Departments (Electrical, Computer
Science, Mathematics, Business, Music) Eight
Monash academics for 1-3 months (Electrical,
Computer Science, Mechanical, Mathematics,
Business)
11
Staff exchange in teaching (cont.)
Both parties have learnt to know the culture and
the study programs at the other university
Both parties have succeded in creating
networks very important Each university pays
its staffs salary !
12
Formal agreement
  • A formal agremeent was established in early 1998.
  • 2 full year students was included in the
    agreement.The
  • agreement was renewed in May 2003. It covers
    student
  • exchange, academic and teaching collaboration,
    collaboration
  • between study programs and deeper collaboration
    in
  • graduate education. The amount of exchange
    students in
  • Undergraduate education will be increased step by
    step to
  • 5 full year students
  • In Luleå many subjects are given in English.
    There are
  • about 150 exchange students a year studying at
    Luleå
  • The Swedish students have NO problems following
  • courses in English at Monash

13
Collaboration in research
To be successful, any collaborative activity has
to be built on mutual interests and personal
relationships The initial teaching exchange
program created good opportunities to identify
potential common research projects
14
Examples of common research projects
Electromagnetic Compatibility and
Antenna Technology
Example of the complementation of strength at the
two institutions - common research projects
- exchange of PhD-students (Urban Lundgren, 6
months at Monash first half of 2001) -
courses offered via Distance Education (across
half the Globe!) (Stewart Jenvey, Åke
Wisten, Urban Lundgren, Dag Björklöf)
15
Common research projects (cont.)
Intelligent Robotics Both groups have
international reputation. - A new telerobotic
project - Exchange of PhD-students (Geoff
Taylor, 2 months at Luleå September-October
2001) (Ray Jarvis, Lindsay Kleeman, Geoff
Taylor, Åke Wernersson, Kalevi Hyyppä, Sven
Rönnbäck)
16
Common research projects (cont.)
Neural Network Theory
A project with one academic from the Luleå
Engineering Faculty and one from the Monash IT
Faculty. A joint Paper was presented at the
Xth European Conference on Developmental
Psychology in Uppsala, Sweden, August 22-26
2001. ( Andrew Paplinski, Lennart Gustafsson)
17
Common research projects (cont.)
  • Distributed Systems
  • A project Mobile City with one
  • academic from the Monash IT Faculty and
  • a group at the Skellefteå Campus 150 km
  • south the Luleå Campus.
  • Some joint Papers have been presented
  • (Arkady Zavslavsky, Christer Åhlund)
  • (Arkady is now adjunct Professer, 10 at the
    Skellefteå Department)

18
Collaboration in education
  • Collaboration in education must
  • extend beyond the exchange of teaching staff
    and
  • students
  • take advantage of new education and
    communication
  • technology to deliver teaching at the host
    University
  • There are some interesting projects in Distance
    Education
  • and Problem Based Learning

19
The course Antenna II given from Monash to
students at Luleå and Monash in real time.
