DEFINITIONS
The following are definitions provided
by webster.com 1. Balance An aesthetically
pleasing integration of elements. 2. Symmetry 1
balanced proportions also beauty of form
arising from balanced proportions 2 the
property of being symmetrical especially
correspondence in size, shape, and relative
position of parts on opposite sides of a dividing
line or median plane or about a center or axis --
compare bilateral symmetry, radial
symmetry. Note A composition does not have to
be symmetrical (bilateral) to be balanced
(example below).
3
THEORY
Balance and Symmetry in Graphic Design can be
derived from two essential principles of design.
1. Space "Positive and Negative. Positive space
relates to the dark. Negative space relates to
the light. In fine arts this is also referred to
as figure and ground - respectively.   2.
Structure Structure is obtained through
compositional theory. Visual elements (line,
shape, texture, color, typography, imagery) using
Principles of Design (unity, variety, balance,
scale, proportion, hierarchy, rhythm and
repetition) are used to design within the
structure.
4
THEORIES
Compositional Theories These theories are the
basis for most design structures. 1.
Symmetrical 2. Assymetrical 3. Law of Thirds
4. Basic Grid Structures (.25, .5,.) 5.
Radial Most examples are in landscape format
for viewing purposes.
5
THEORIES
Symmetrical Compositions Compositions that are
equal on both sides of a Bilateral line.
6
THEORIES
Asymmetrical Compositions Compositions that are
not equal on both sides of a Bilateral line.
7
THEORIES
Law of Thirds Compositions
This theory is mainly derived from photography,
but can be implemented into graphic design as
well. It is basically breaking the board up into
thirds and placing elements along the third lines
and at the intersections.

THEORIES
Combination of theories
By combining compositional theories together a
structure appears in which Graphic Design is
based.
16
THEORIES
Balance and Symmetry used in different types of
compositions 1. Internal Reference
Compositions 2. Single Page Compositions 3.
Multiple Page Compositions
17
THEORIES
Internal Reference Compositions Definition Comp
ositions that work within themselves. They can
exist on their own (logos) such as on a baseball
hat, shoes, and shirts. They are not designed for
a specific page size. examplesLogos, Symbols,
Icons, and Pictographs.
18
THEORIES
Single Page Compositions Definition Compositions
that are designed for a single page format. Main
format choices are portrait, landscape,
square. examplesPosters, Promotional Covers, and
Advertisements.
19
THEORIES
Multiple Page Compostitions Definition Compositi
ons that are designed for multipage
sequential design layouts. Where an existing
design will carry across multiple
pages. examplesPublishing, Annual Reports,
Magazine Articles, Newspapers, and Brochures.
