Collaboration with Universities - Challenges
  • The West Midlands
  • has a strong university
  • base to support
  • innovation but

36
Draft West Midlands Economic Strategy
37
Focus on -
  • All clusters, particularly 5 ITC priorities -
Health and medical technologies, Energy and
    Environmental Technologies, Advanced materials
and nanotechnology, Digital media (and ICT),
    Transport Technologies
  • Development of existing critical mass, e.g.
    technology corridors, science parks and
    innovation centres
  • Services as well as manufacturing
  • Public-private partnership, real business
    commitment
  • Development from successful pilot activity

38
Actions Ladders of Progression
  • Stimulating business demand for innovation e.g.
    vouchers schemes and innovation advisors
  • Increasing knowledge transfer - collaborative RD
via access to and extension of existing schemes
  • Retaining and maximising the potential of skilled
    people placements and increasing
    entrepreneurship activity of students and
    graduates
  • Building demonstrators as showcases for the
integration of knowledge or technologies into
    products, processes and systems (big,
    multi-partner)

39
Improving Knowledge Exchange with Universities
  • Need to stimulate demand from both sides of the
    fence
  • People are important, for qualifying needs, for
identifying appropriate skills and expertise, as
    well as delivery
  • Use of IT can help
  • Large companies (and research budgets) get
    attention
  • But from small acorns, large oaks can grow
  • A business problem that needs a solution today
can become a valuable RD programme and a major
    economic success
  • No single answer!
