During the 1600's, Holland, a democratic country
governed by wealthy bankers, merchants, and
traders, was economically successful as an
independent Protestant nation. Dutch artists
depended on the wealthy middle class to buy their
works of art. The Dutch middle class was looking
for small paintings suitable for private homes,
rather than large-scale works. Local artists
addressed these demands by specializing
particular subjects, such as still lifes,
seascapes, cityscapes or portraits. Frans Hals
perfected portraiture in Haarlem, and Jan Vermeer
became a master of genre painting in Delft.
Rembrandt painted a wide range of subjects in
Amsterdam. These artists were known collectively
as the Dutch Masters.
