What is emotional intelligence (EI) and how
important is it in the workplace? EI is a
relatively new field in human behaviour and
personality research. Specifically EI is
involved in the capacity to perceive emotions,
assimilate emotion-related feelings, understand
the information of these emotions and manage
them (Mayer, Caruso Salovey, 1999). It may
influence our academic achievement, work
performance and our ability to communicate
effectively. Emotional intelligence can help
solve everyday problems, build and sustain
interpersonal relationships and possibly our
ability to make moral decisions. This
introductory seminar is aimed at people at all
levels in the workplace, but especially those
involved in Human Resources and recruitment. The
seminar will explain what EI is, why it is
important to individuals and organisations and
how awareness and management of emotions in the
workplace can be enhanced through training.
