    schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia to earn
    this award.

    doors by the main office where they will need to
    use the buzzer and show their identification.

Main Office
  • These are the people who work in the main office.
  • Mrs. Kirby is a secretary who will greet
    visitors, answer questions and offer assistance.
    She is in charge of scheduling the use of the
    building.
  • Mrs. Happersett is a secretary who will greet
    visitors, answer questions and offer assistance.
    She can assist with registering new students.
  • Mrs. Steele is the bookkeeper for our school.
    She also helps with student work permits.

  • Mr.Keener is an Assistant
    Principal. He coordinates the testing program and

  • helps with discipline issues.
  • Mrs. Robinson is an Assistant
    Principal. She is the Special Education contact
    person
  • and she is in charge of busses.

    that everything is going the way it should-that
    Harper Park is a safe, happy and productive place
    to be.

Parent Liaison
  • Mrs. Kemp is also in the Main Office. She helps
    parents and the school stay connected to each
    other. Since she speaks Spanish, she is able to
    be an interpreter for parents in communicating
    with teachers.

School Nurse
  • On the way from the main office towards the House
    areas you will find
  • Mrs. Thomson, our nurse. She is here every day to
    take care of students and staff.

  • At Harper Park we stress literacy skills.
  • One way we do this is with our Word of the Day.
    This display is located on the wall opposite the
    Clinic.
  • We also have D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read)
    time in homeroom.

  • Harper Park Middle School is designed so that
    each grade has its own area. This is called
    school within a school.
  • The Eighth Grade is in House A.
  • Seventh Grade is in House B.
  • Sixth Grade is found in House C.
  • Each house has its own dean or principal for the
    grade. There is also a counselor in each house
    and a secretary.
  • Each grade is divided into teams of about
    100 students and a group of teachers who have
    planning together when their students have
    resource (study hall).
  • You will have a locker and most of you classes in
    your grade level house.

  • You will have two lockers. One will be in the
    House area.
  • You will want to keep it clean and organized.

  • Mrs. Young is the House A secretary. You will
    visit her for early dismissal and bus passes.
  • Mrs. Young is the schools registrar.

School Resource Officerlocated in House A
  • Each secondary school in Loudoun County has a
    School Resource Officer to help protect students.
    Since Harper Park is in the town of Leesburg, our
    SRO is assigned from the Leesburg Police force.
    She is Officer Day.
  • Officer Day also teaches about gang resistance to
    sixth graders. The program is named G.R.E.A.T.

In sixth grade, you will take language arts every
day and science will be in a lab. You will study
Spanish as a part of language arts. You will also
take math and history.

    Keyboarding (typing) with Ms. Cornelius
  • and one semester of Art.

Music Education
  • Music Education is available in all grades. Sixth
    and seventh graders study music for 45 minutes on
    alternate days. Eighth graders who choose a music
    elective spend an entire block in that class.
  • Choice include
  • Instrumental Music which must be started in 6th
    grade.
  • Chorus Strings
  • Music Lab Guitar-instruction begins in 7th
    grade

Physical Education
  • You will take a Health and Physical Education
    each year at Harper Park. While most of the class
    will be taught in the gym, the health component
    will be in a classroom.

  • You will have another locker in the gym. The
    center compartment is used while you are in PE
    and the surrounding compartments are use for
    storage.
  • Yes, showers are available.

Resource
  • Every student takes a resource class. It is in a
    double room with two resource monitors. This is a
    time where students can complete homework, ask
    questions and get help from their teachers.
  • Sometimes the counselor will come into resource
    to conduct a lesson on study skills, violence
    prevention or other topic.
  • Sometimes the dean will come into resource to
    talk about topics that need immediate attention.
  • 6th and 7th graders who are in Spectrum do not
    have resource until 8th grade.

Cafeteria
  • Students eat lunch with their grade level. Sixth
    grade eats at 1151, seventh grade at 1235 and
    eighth grade at 119.
  • They can choose a full Class A lunch or they
    can purchase items ala carte.
  • Milk and juice are also available.

  • Mrs. Jagoe is our librarian. Her assistant is
    Mrs. Sheikh.

Auditioriumlocated to the left of the main

  • Each year we begin with grade level assemblies to
    celebrate coming back to school.
  • Later, we have other assemblies. This year
    Goombay and the IsaacJoseph Band visited us.
  • Each year we have a talent show and concerts
    given by band, strings, chorus and guitar.

At Harper Park we celebrate our diversity.
  • In March we have Heritage Day. Students present
    projects representing their culture and we have a
    pot luck dinner for the whole family.

  • Some of our students speak very little English.
    They study English as a Second Language. Their

Harper Park students are caring.
  • Student conduct various fund raising activities
    to help out others.
  • They raised over 10,000 to help victims of
    Hurricane Katrina.
  • They hold food and clothing drives.
