Nationally Recognized Recycling Program
  • Launched in the year 1990
  • guidelines on their recycling website that
    include instructions for materials such as
    aluminum cans, corrugated cardboard, glass,
    newspaper, magazines, ink-jet cartridges, cell
    phones, pagers, plastics, tin cans, paper, and
    the list goes on!
  • Opened its own recycling center in 1998 as a
    service to the community

Environmental Faculty and Staff
  • COE (Committee on the Environment) includes 16
    members involved in campus planning
  • Included sustainable officer John Wegner
    appointed in 2001.
  • The COE is responsible for

  • received recognition as a Platinum

Alternative Transportation Program
  • Created in 1999 Objective is to create a
    pedestrian walking campus and values green space
  • Takes further action to improve air quality and
    traffic congestion
  • Uses electric and natural gas vehicles,
    vanpooling, and a program that allows employees
    to check out Ford Think electric cars
  • Campus plan has parking on perimeter

Green Practices
  • Plans to maintain 385 of Emorys 703 acres of
    land as protected forests and green space
  • Practice xeriscaping
  • Compost excess foliage
  • Promote green chemistry within laboratory
    buildings through safe fume hoods, lab counters
    without epoxy, and are cleaned of contaminants by
    using 100 one-pass air that uses outside air
    to flush the rooms

  • What the university is most known for
  • Green Building Policy endorsed by the board of
    trustees in 2002 where LEED is the guiding
    principle
  • Considers site and natural lighting
  • Considers water efficiency- saves 2-4 million
    gallons of water per year
  • Considers materials ex) low VOC recyclable
    materials
  • Considers construction and recycles debris saving
    20 thousand dollars
  • Considers energy efficiency HVAC 4 enthalpy
    wheels
  • Show evidence that green buildings increase
    productivity
  • Buildings will make up initial costs within
    merely a decade and therefore makes economical
    sense

    including a green dorm under the Energy Star
    Program
