Equivalent Decimals
  • 078 is the same as 78.
  • The zero in the hundreds place isn't needed.
  • The number still has no hundredths, 7 tens and 8
    ones.
  • 5.4 is the same as 5.40
  • The zero at the end is not necessary.
  • The number still has 5 ones, 4 tenths, and no
    hundredths.

3
Examples
  • 0.65
  • 0.650
  • 0.6500
  • 0.65000
  • 0.650000

4
Zeros
  • You may add as many zeros left of digits that are
    before a decimal.
  • You may also add as many zeros as you want right
of the digits after the decimal.
  • 000032.456000 032.456 32.456 32.4560000
These all have 3 tens,, 2 ones, 4 tenths, 5
    hundredths and 6 thousandths.

Meaning of Zero
  • 0.42 is the same as .42,
  • however if there is no whole part (ones, tens,
    etc..) in a number
  • a single zero in front of the decimal is proper.

12
Comparing and Ordering
  • What does it mean to compare?

Compare and Order
  • Look at the whole numbers
  • Which one is greater of the whole numbers?
  • How can we compare them?
  • Lets Draw a Model

21
Example
  • Put these numbers in order from the largest to
    the smallest.0.32, 0.203, 0.03, 0.3

22
Greater Than and Less Than
  • The symbol lt is read less than
  • 4lt56
  • The symbol gt is read greater than.
  • 300 gt 52

23
Inequality Signs
  • gt greater than
  • lt less than
  • equal
  • greater than

24
Inequality Signs
  • gt greater than
  • lt less than
  • equal
  • greater than or equal
  • less than or equal
  • almost equal to, congruent
  • ? not equal to

25
Comparing or Ordering
  • 1) Line up the decimal2) Fill in
zerosFollowing these procedures, will assist you
in comparing all places in the number system from
    tenths to hundredths and infinity.
