The Seniors EyeCare Program
  • Ensures that every senior has access to medical
    eye care
  • Raises awareness about age-related eye disease,
    including cataracts
  • Provides free eye care educational materials
  • Facilitates access to care.

How the program works
  • A nationwide 24-hour, seven day a week,
    toll-free helpline, 800-222-EYES (3937)
  • Individuals call for themselves and/or family
    members and friends to request free eye care
    material and to see if they qualify for care from
    one of more than 8,000 volunteer ophthalmologists.

To qualify for a referral one must
  • Be a U.S. citizens or legal resident
  • Age 65 or older
  • Have not seen an ophthalmologist in three or
    more years
  • Not have eye care insurance through an HMO or VA

Treatment
  • A comprehensive medical eye exam and up to one
    year of treatment, at no out-of-pocket expense.
  • Volunteer ophthalmologists waive Medicare
    co-payments and unmet deductibles resulting in no
    out-of-pocket expense to the patient. Patients
    without insurance receive care at no cost.

Other services
  • EyeCare America offers multiple eye care
    programs for which individuals may qualify.
  • Callers are automatically screened to determine
    the program that provides the most appropriate
    eye care services for the patient.

Ophthalmologist
  • Eyeglasses
  • Prescription drugs
  • Hospital services
  • Fees of other medical professionals
  • Above services are not included in the program.

  • Identify and refer people who may benefit from
    our partnership
  • Speak at your local senior center
  • Send out template letters to editors of your
    local media
  • Distribute program posters and flyers, at
    churches, libraries or community centers

EyeCare America
  • The umbrella program for the Academy
    Foundations national public service projects.
  • Educates the public, primary care physicians,
    and other health care workers about the
    importance of timely eye examinations/care.
  • Disseminates information regarding eye health.
  • Links qualified individuals with volunteer
    ophthalmologists (Eye M.D.s) who have agreed to
    provide care for the program.
