Managing/Leveraging Exchange Partner Relationships
  • Opportunities
  • Exchange partner can showcase its facilities and
promote its programs during a GATE visit.
  • Students can be exposed to local management
    concepts (e.g. ubuntu in Africa).
  • Summer programs can add a lot of value to a
resume when they have a certain competitive
    advantage (luxury brand management/ESSEC, Doing
Business In Korea Seoul National University).
  • Most summer programs will be partially subsidized
by host school and/or companies (very attractive
    price point for students).
  • Students gain increased global awareness about
    business, social, economic, cultural or
    healthcare challenges and opportunities.
  • Students, faculty, staff develop a greater
appreciation for foreign languages and cultures
and build their network of friends and business
    contacts.
  • Duke/FSB can re-balance an Exchange partnership
using flows of outgoing students taking a summer
    programs.

7
Managing/Leveraging Exchange Partner
Relationships (Contd)
  • Challenges
  • Schedules between schools dont always
synchronize very well even for 2-3 weeks (e.g.,
ESSECs Global Manager in Europe program and
    internships).
  • The academic experience and standards can vary
widely. You have to trust but verify and
supervise by doing at least a midterm survey.
  • Medical and evacuation coverages must be analyzed
    and communicated adequately before students
depart, even for only 2-3 weeks.
  • Hospitals will usually require advance payment
for care upon the admission of any patient.
  • Short term housing can be very expensive in
cosmopolitan cities such as London, Rome, Tokyo
    or Paris.
  • Approval for academic credit (if required before
    implementation) can be a show-stopper.
  • Short-term programs must be taught and/or
    administered in English.
  • Some students might still require a visa to
    attend a short-term academic program.
