Network Infrastructure
  • High bandwidth connectivity between IIT sites and
access to the CAnet 4 Canada-wide broadband
    optical research and education network.
  • Our unique infrastructure helps us attract and
enable world-class researchers to carry out
collaborative research at the highest level with
the private, public, and academic sectors.
  • A leading-edge broadband network infrastructure
not only to attract research partners, but also
to enable NRC researchers to collaborate easily
and securely, both between our sites and remotely
    while traveling.

Human Web research themes
Research focus on Human factors for the Web,
where the Web is defined as the universe of
network-accessible information.
  • Research themes
  • Usability (understanding users and developers)
  • Mobility (anywhere - anytime computing)
  • Internationalization (language, culture,
    localization)
  • Accessibility (abilities and disabilities -
    physical, financial)
  • Collaboration
  • Human Factors of privacy, security and trust
  • for e-Business, e-Government, e-Learning and
    e-Health applications.

7
Current projects
  • Alternative interaction techniques for use with
mobile and wearable devices speech, gesture,
audio (Audiophys, Multimodal Field Data Entry,
    MOVE projects).
  • Visual aspects of Web internationalization
(Visual Cultural Interface Design Tool Cultural
    Web Spider projects)
  • Tools capable of assessing trustworthiness of
    e-Business applications trust management
    architecture (OMNIVORE, xTrust projects).
  • Research in the use of multiple forms of
    representation to support historical instruction
    (HistorySpace Project) and emergency preparedness
    (Serious Game Project).

8
The AudioPhys ProjectAudio Enhanced
Physiotherapy for Motor Rehabilitation
  • Investigation into audio-enhanced mobile
    interaction techniques using an
    e-Learning/e-Health application to serve local
    clients
  • Participants Jo Lumsden (Research Lead - NRC)
    Measurand Inc. (Technology) RVH-SCCR (Health
    Care Provider)
  • Aim investigate use of musical-based audio cues
    to enhance physiotherapeutic motor rehabilitation
    of patients
  • develop tools that are sympathetic to current
    physiotherapeutic processes whilst providing
    beneficial enhancement
  • provide greater analytical facility to the
    physiotherapy professional provide currently
unavailable levels of feedback to the patient
    during treatment
  • Phased Development observational studies design
    develop prototypes evaluation extension
  • Project Lead Dr. Jo Lumsden

9
xTrust Project
  • A novel approach to building a globally scalable,
application neutral platform for trust services
  • Participants Scott Flinn (Research Lead - NRC)
    RSA Security (Research partner)
  • Project aim develop xTrust - globally scalable,
application neutral platform for trust services
  • Exposes, clarifies and supports the complex,
    context-sensitive relationships inherent in
communication between people who trust each
other, to different degrees and for different
    purposes
  • Foundation for
  • globally scalable authentication, authorization
    and federated identity frameworks (primary
    interest of RSA)
  • global scale, context-aware reputation services
    (primary interest of IIT)
  • any application needing trustworthy communication
-- the familiar human sense of trust --
    especially across large, heterogeneous
    communities

Human Web Labs Mobile HCI Lab
  • Lab designed to support truly mobile usability
    evaluations of mobile systems
  • typical evaluations of mobile systems are static
(due to lack of availability of this kind of
    facility)
  • such evaluations highlight usability issues at
    the conceptual level
  • such evaluations do not put systems to the test
    under realistic, real use conditions
  • imperative to test mobile systems under
representative conditions if the potential of
mobile technology is to be fully realized
  • without such testing, real risk that mobile
technology will ultimately be abandoned by users
    due to lack of usability
  • Lab design allows mock-up of real world contexts
of use under controlled, safe conditions so that
    evaluations are meaningful
  • Can simulate real-world visual and audio
distractions around users whilst they are
    interacting with a mobile device
  • Lab contact Dr. Jo Lumsden

11
Modelling a Realistic Mobile Environment
  • The use of mobile devices such as PDAs and cell
    phones is increasing
  • The users of such devices operate in a complex
    environment
  • Users will often be mobile
  • Users will often have to be aware of their
surroundings (e.g. to avoid possible hazards)
  • External distractions will often limit a users
ability to focus on the task (e.g. the noise of a
passing bus may put the user off)
  • Examples of the factors were are investigating
  • Mobility
  • Passive distractions (e.g. distractions which may
be attention grabbing but do not require a user
    response)
  • Active distractions (e.g. distractions that
    require a user response)
  • User responses vary from moving away from a
hazard to responding to a piece of information
  • Distractions may be audio (e.g. conversations or
traffic noise) or visual (e.g. traffic or
    pedestrians)
  • Project Lead Dr. Murray Crease

12
Human Web LabsVoice and Multimodal Lab
  • This laboratory is designed for conducting
    research
    on voice and multimodal technologies
    for mobile workforce.
  • The rooms are soundproofed for evaluating

the accuracy of speech recognition in different
    environmental conditions.
  • Our research will allow mobile users to access
Web-based services using speech only or speech
and stylus or keyboard on a mobile device - there
    are applications in manufacturing, forestry,
mining, environmental work, health care field.
  • Our technologies improve the usability of mobile
devices and allow for better data gathering in
industrial field environment, or in an emergency
    situation.
  • Lab contact Dr. Irina Kondratova, P.Eng.

13
The MFDE ProjectMultimodal Field Data Entry
  • Investigation into applications of mobile
technology and speech recognition for data
    collection in the field
  • Participants Irina Kondratova (Research Lead -
NRC)Jeff Rankin (Research Lead UNB, Dept. of
    Civil Engineering) AEC Innovations (Industry
    partner)
  • NBIF funded project
  • Aim investigate applications of speech
recognition on handheld devices for field
    concrete quality control data collection
  • develop a proof of concept application of a
multimodal field quality control data collection
  • evaluate the usability of this technology
  • technology extension
