Vermonters Freeman Medical Scholars Program
Scholarship Summary 2001-2005

• Thanks to the Freeman Foundation gift to the
  College of Medicine, primarily
• for medical student scholarships to help
  University of Vermont medical
• students return after residency to meet Vermonts
  health care needs in any
• specialty, UVM medical students may be eligible
  for a 10,000/year
• scholarship to commit to return to Vermont after
  completion of residency
• training. Currently, there are 175 graduated
  scholars in residency training
• (may take 3-10 years) and 143 current medical
  students (who will be going
• into residency training).
• A portion of the gift to the College of Medicine
  also supports the Freeman
• Educational Loan Repayment Program.

• To recruit and retain physicians of any specialty
  to rural and underserved areas of Vermont
• Total physicians 109
• Total number of awards 200
• Distribution of awards ALL 14 counties in
  Vermont
• Physician specialties include emergency
  medicine, general surgery, physiatry (physical
  medicine and rehabilitation), anesthesiology,
  internal medicine, family practice, psychiatry,
  child psychiatry, pediatrics, cardiology,
  gastroenterology, hospitalists, radiology,
  urology, and obstetrics/gynecology.
