Vermonters Freeman Medical Scholars Program
Scholarship Summary 2001-2005
- Thanks to the Freeman Foundation gift to the
College of Medicine, primarily - for medical student scholarships to help
University of Vermont medical - students return after residency to meet Vermonts
health care needs in any - specialty, UVM medical students may be eligible
for a 10,000/year - scholarship to commit to return to Vermont after
completion of residency - training. Currently, there are 175 graduated
scholars in residency training - (may take 3-10 years) and 143 current medical
students (who will be going - into residency training).
- A portion of the gift to the College of Medicine
also supports the Freeman - Educational Loan Repayment Program.

- To recruit and retain physicians of any specialty
to rural and underserved areas of Vermont - Total physicians 109
- Total number of awards 200
- Distribution of awards ALL 14 counties in
Vermont - Physician specialties include emergency
medicine, general surgery, physiatry (physical
medicine and rehabilitation), anesthesiology,
internal medicine, family practice, psychiatry,
child psychiatry, pediatrics, cardiology,
gastroenterology, hospitalists, radiology,
urology, and obstetrics/gynecology.
