The new, first-of-its-kind initiative will enable
cardiovascular fellowship trainees to participate
in a set of educational modules covering
age-associated physiologic changes, differences
in drug metabolism, common cardiovascular
syndromes in older adults, relevant aspects of
geriatric assessment, and the nuances of
providing care to older adults. A consensus
conference of educators, geriatricians and
cardiologists will assemble the new curriculum,
building on previous society and foundation
efforts over the past 20 years.
3Essentials of Cardiovascular Care in Older Adults

4Essentials of Cardiovascular Care in Older Adults
Example Cardiovascular Aging Physiology
- By the end of this session, fellows will be able
to - List 6 age-related changes in cardiovascular
physiology (e.g., central arterial stiffness) - Describe the inter-relationships between these
physiologic changes (e.g., ventriculovascular
coupling) - Describe the implications of these changes in
relationship to age-related changes in other
organ systems (e.g., effects on oxygen
consumption) - Describe the implications of these changes in
relationship to specific situational stressors
(e.g., exercise, sepsis, or hemorrhage)
