Initial steps
  • Eldred Parry, representing THET, gave an open
lecture in Brighton hosted by Melanie Newport
    (Senior lecturer in infectious diseases)
  • Those interested listed their e-mail
  • Core group, representing as wide a field as
possible from the Hospital and Medical School,
formed a steering group which evolved into a more
    formal committee.
  • Views on possible links were canvassed

5
Choice of link
  • A number of people in Brighton have experience of
    Southern Africa
  • Peter Mwaba now Managing Director at UTH and
Melanie Newport knew each other personally, both
were enthusiastic about a joint project
  • Direct air links make visits relatively easy and
    avoid lengthy road journeys

6
Choice of link
  • There is a good match between the institutions.
  • UTH is a Teaching Hospital and Tertiary referral
centre responsible for training doctors and
    nurses
  • Brighton has a new Medical School as well as a
    Nursing and Pharmacy school

Aims of link

Health Care workers at UTH to help them provide a
high standard of care in Lusaka
  • To broaden the clinical experience of Health Care
    staff based in Brighton
  • To arrange short term visits to deliver defined
courses or educational objectives or clinical
    services

8
  • To host return visits for health care workers for
a defined period to enable them to undertake
    appropriate CPD
  • To share educational materials, in particular
making use of e-learning if possible
  • To provide necessary equipment

9
Roles of the steering committees

Other priorities

Funding
  • Pay roll giving
  • Fund raising events organized by Junior Doctors
    and Medical Students
  • Seed corn grant from THET
  • DELPHE grant for HIV project
  • Student grant form Brighton University

22
Issues and limitations
  • It has proved difficult to get a reciprocal
committee established, clinicians and managers in
    Lusaka are hugely overstretched
  • However it is important that Lusaka determines
    what is needed
  • A paid coordinator in Lusaka would help to run
the project efficiently, funds for salaries
    difficult to guarantee
  • Time and money, we need to be realistic about
    what can be achieved

23
Issues and limitations
  • Important to have some early successes e.g.
    external examiners
  • Need to remain realistic. We cannot provide full
    time staff for long periods
  • Approach to time is different in the two
    cultures
  • Concerns around establishing payroll giving and
    where to hold funds

24
Unexpected bonus
  • Working on this project has meant meeting a wide
range of colleagues from different disciplines
within my own institutions in Brighton as well as
    colleagues from Lusaka.
  • This has certainly enriched and informed my world
