• Even after his death in 1890 his famous way of
  painting still lives on and influences artists
  all round the world.

• Vincent Van Gogh did not become a painter until
  the age of 28 and it was only the last 3 years of
  hid life, racked by insanity and loneliness, that
  he flowered into genius and produced the greater
  part of the paintings and drawings for which he
  is now famous.
• As many details in his life suggest he was over
  sensitive and fanatically religious at the best
  of times.

Van Gogh found the drawing and painting of still
life subjects invaluable as an aid to
development, if he painted or drew a pair of old
shoes, they stood not so much as a pair of shoes,
but more of symbols of all the labour and
sacrifices of the individual who wore them. They
were fragments of humanity, more than fragments
of leather.

• Van Gogh was born in Holland.
• He was a son of a pastor.
• He was highly emotion and lacked self confidence.
• He worked as a clerk in a book store, a preacher
  and an art salesman before he became an artist.
• Between 1860 and 1880 is when he decided to
  become an artist.
• Van Gogh went to Paris France and went to study
  art.
• He met up with his brother Théo.
• He decided to go south to Arles and he persuaded
  his friends to go with him. Gauguin did but it
  was disastrous.
• This resulted in heavy depression in Van Gogh.
• He eventually cut part of his ear off.
• He then went to an asylum in Auvers-sur-oise.
• He became much better but two months later he
  shot himself.
• Van Goghs work has then been sold and discovered
  all over the world.
• He was born in 1853 and died in 1890.

• Starry Starry Night

At the worst of times he was insane and utterly
lonely, ignored by family and friends (except his
brother Theo) and rejected by women. This lead to
periods of great depression and real despair.

• During the 9 years in which he painted he
  completed over 600 canvases and over a thousand
  drawigs and watercolours.
• He only sold one painting within his lifetime.

  but also all of art history.

• Vincent van Gogh, for whom color was the chief
  symbol of expression, was born in Groot-Zundest,
  Holland. The son of a pastor, brought up in a
  religious and cultured atmosphere, Vincent was
  highly emotional and lacked self-confidence.
  Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to
  become an artist, van Gogh had had two unsuitable
  and unhappy romances and had worked
  unsuccessfully as a clerk in a bookstore, an art
  salesman, and a preacher in the Borinage (a
  dreary mining district in Belgium), where he was
  dismissed for overzealousness.

With his reed pen and ink drawings he used his
pen almost savagely with heavy slashes and
scribbles, yet he still managed to convey what he
saw accurately.
