1
Welcome to Peachland Elementary School
  • Ready Set Learn

2
Literacy?
  • What is Literacy?
  • Literacy starts long before a child enters
    school.
  • How can you help develop your childs literacy?

3
Literacy starts long before your child arrives at
school! You are providing the foundation for your
childs learning.
4
Have your child read pictures and picture books
5
Rhyming
  • Play Rhyming Games
  • Read Nursery Rhymes to your child.
  • Use songs like Down by the Bay, Willoby
Wallaby Woo to introduce rhyming in a fun way.

6
Play First Sound Games.
  • Play first sound games. (Map , Mat? Do they
    start the same?)
  • Whose name starts with the same sound as bear?

7
Alphabet Recognition
  • Start introducing the letters of the alphabet as
your child sees them in their environment.
(example M for Macdonalds, S for stop sign)

8
Writing
  • Provide lots of paper, pens, crayons and markers
    for your child.

9
Draw With Your Child
10
Strengthen your childs fine motor control.
  • Strengthen your childs fine motor control with
activities such as playdough, duplo (lego, light
brite, sewing with wool in large shapes etc.)

11
Encourage Your Child to Pretend Write.
  • Demonstrating an understanding that the marks on
the pages of the books you read are important,
just like the marks they are making.
  • If you teach your child to sing and write the
alphabet teach the two concepts together and
start by using capital letters as they are
distinct and can not be confused with each other.

12
Numeracy
  • Numeracy? What do we mean by Numeracy?

13
Counting
  • Three year olds should be able to count orally to
    10. They will need lots of practice to count
objects to 10. This is called one to one
    correspondence. Touching objects, pushing them
or picking them up while saying the number is
important. Provide your child with real
    situations to practice counting.

14
Sorting
  • Three year olds should be able to have lots of
    practice sorting.

15
Shapes
  • Three year olds should be able to identify shapes
    and colors.
