Green Cleaning at the MEDDAC Barracks
  • CPT Teal Reeves
  • Chief, Environmental Health

8
What is Green Cleaning?
  • Green Cleaning is cleaning using products that do
not endanger people or the environment
  • This is especially critical to those who have
respiratory conditions (such as asthma), or
    sensitive skin (dermatitis)
  • It involves using products that have been proven
to be safer to the environment and human health
  • Green Seal certified products

9
Why Implement Green Cleaning?
  • Americans spend an estimated 90 of their time
    indoors, breathing indoor air
  • This air is often harmful due to VOCs from
    cleaning products
  • Green cleaning reduces our impact on the
    environment
  • Concentrated formulas?less transportation, less
    packaging
  • Non-toxic chemicals do not enter wastestream or
    air
  • Green cleaning often costs less!

10
What has the MEDDAC done?
  • Housekeeping staff has made it their Performance
Improvement project to move to all Green Seal
Certified products, and extended this into the
    barracks by training the occupants
  • Soldiers can only use Green Seal Certified
cleaning products in the common areas and
    personal areas

11
LEED Status
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
  • This Green Building Rating System is the
nationally accepted benchmark for the design,
construction, and operation of high performance
    green buildings
  • The MEDDAC barracks are certified New Building
Bronze with Green Cleaning and other programs,
they can maintain this grade as an Existing
    Building

    up 66 from FY04
  • Most copier paper procured at 30 post consumer
    content
  • Numerous paper usage products abound on the
    installation

14
Paper Policy Reduction Goals
  • Reduce Paper Consumption by 10 per year by 2010
    based upon FY06 levels.
  • Identify 50 post consumer content as the paper
criteria for paper procurement in new contracts
  • Directorates will develop and document internal
strategies to meet the previous goals

15
Best Practices
