THE SALMON CREEK NATURE TRAIL
  • By student reporters Anna Eva and Mimi Largier

2
HISTORY
  • The flat area at the beginning of the
nature trail used to be a train track.
The train ran through Occidental and was
the local train. One of the train stations was
the area just before you enter the nature trail.
Over the summer several years ago the nature
trail was constructed with great care and
    perseverance.

3
  • Along the trail you will see many different
things such as a tree that bends
    over and looks like an
arch(below) and steps carved into a log that fell
    over the path (left).

You will also see a stream at a place called
salamander and/or sandy flats (right). These
places are well known by the students of
Harmony/Salmon Creek School.

PLANTS YOU WILL SEE
There are many different plants on the nature
trail. These are only a few of them. The Albino
Redwood is a very rare specimen, occurring by
pure chance (top left). You have to watch out
for the large patches of poison oak (bottom
middle) and Brambles (top right). The
ferns along the path are a beautiful
sight (bottom right left).
5
WHAT CAN I EAT?!
While youre on the nature trail try the
redwood sorrel which is sour and very tasty
(above). The tips of the ferns, which are
called fiddle neck ferns, are very nutty and are
full of taste (left). You can also eat the tips
of redwood leaves that are bright green and full
of vitamin C (we do not have a picture of them).

HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE TRAIL SOON!
