Whats Important?
  • Depends on who you are.
  • The Instruments
  • Specialized fast response systems
  • The Big Glass
  • The non-visible guys
  • Instruments not of this Earth.satellites,
    balloons
  • The People
  • Average, run-of-the-mill astrophysicists
  • Solar science
  • Planetary science

What do you need to decide for a follow-up ?
4
What do they have in common?
The Most Basic Elements
  • Is this a primary alert ?
  • Where did it happen (CoordinatesRA DEC, maybe
    not)?
  • When did it happen ?
  • Who saw it (the system or telescope) ?
  • What do you think it is? (SN, GRB, Flare, etc.)

Other (Possibly) Useful Information
  • How big was it? (magnitude, fluence, etc.)
  • How did you see it ? (instrument configuration)
  • Errors on location, time, etc.
  • Detailed Instrument information ?(location)

5
The VOEvent
  • Covers the basics
  • Who - Why
  • What - How
  • When - Citations
  • Where
  • Utilizes XML
  • Establishes a standard
  • Databases easily (relational or xml)

Ongoing Engineering
  • We should adopt VOEvent
  • Meets our needs in HTN
  • Meets global needs for event notification
  • Works for robotics
  • Works for human systems
  • Easily stored in databases
  • Operational tools in place (TALONS, eSTAR,
    CalTech)
  • Still to be determined
  • Still has not gotten stamp of approval from IVOA
  • Uses two other standards that will be ratified
    after VOEvent is
  • STC (where/when)
  • UCDs (several places)
  • XML parsing, authentication, verification, etc.
    can be slow. Solutions?
  • Registry not operational yet
