I) General Zonation Pattern of Mangroves

Questions
Can you observe any special features that enable
Kandelia to gain firm anchorage in the muddy
substratum?
Look at other mangrove tree species e.g. Black
Mangrove (Avicennia marina), what other
adaptations for anchorage can you see?
What is the significance of pneumatophores to
Black Mangrove?
4
Questions
Locate the mangrove tree Aegiceras (Aegiceras
corniculatum). Look carefully at the leaf
surface, can you find any liquid or white
crystals on the surface? What are they? What is
the significance of this?
Locate Lumnitzera (Lumnitzera racemosa), touch
the leaves to feel their thickness and observe
the cuticle (break the leaf to do this). Can you
suggest why the leaves should be so succulent
(thick) and have such a thick cuticle?

Sedimentation e.g. Deep Bay
  • Accretion rate about 3 cm/year,
  • Mangroves extending out into
  • Deep Bay at some 15 -20 m/year,
  • Questions
  • - Source of sediments?
  • - Past sedimentation patterns
  • - Future predictions
  • - Implications for the Ramsar Site
