To Kill A Mockingbird

• The teacher asked students to physically look
  through their novel
• and take note on what they observed.
• She utilized their observations to introduce
  parallel plots and talk about the different
  divisions in the book. She explained that the
  first division pertained to childs fears and the
  second part dealt with adult fears.
• The teacher explained that To Kill A
  Mockingbird is a fictional book and she wanted
  her students to understand the historical
  significance, experience prejudice and understand
  how hypocrisy plagues our society.
• In summary, she told students that they looked at
  the plot, the physical structure of the book, why
  they were reading it, and now they needed to talk
  about the narrator.
• She asked student who was narrating the story?
  She had them explain what it was like when a six
  year old tells a story.
• She placed a picture of her niece on the overhead
  in order to bring the narrator to life. She told
  students that they needed to be patient when they
  read the book and not close the book on her
  little Grace.

• The English and reading teachers cant do it
  alone (Langer, 2001)
• The overall school culture needs to be supportive

• 1. By 4th grade the average boy is two years
  behind the average girl in reading and writing
• 2. Boys score significantly lower than girls on
  the National Assessment of Educational Progress
  Reading and Writing assessments
• 3. Far more boys from the same socio-economic
  group as girls score Below Basic on NAEP
• 4. Boys make up 70 of special education classes
  and are 4 times more likely to have ADHD than
  girls
