Scenario
  • Farmette in Western Dane County
  • 8 cow-calf pairs
  • 5 Horses
  • 4 mares (2 pregnant)
  • 1 gelding

What happened
  • One of the mares ( 9 months preg) aborts
  • All horses were vaccinated with a 4-way vaccine
    last May
  • In Jan/Feb two of the horses came back from a
    show
  • All developed respiratory problems
  • The other mare is 6 months pregnant- what should
    be done to prevent her from aborting

Vaccine Schedule
  • 4-way vaccine (annually given in spring)
  • East and West Equine Encephalomyelitis
  • Influenza
  • Tetanus

What caused the abortion?
  • Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis)
  • Two strains
  • EHV1- Causes abortions (6-11 months)
  • EHV4- Causes respiratory problems
  • Transmitted by
  • Direct feed and water contamination
  • Direct contact with other infected horses

EHV
  • Causes abortion 2 weeks- 4 months after
    respiratory symptoms are present
  • 85 of the abortions happen in the last three
    months of gestation
  • Can happen without any other symptoms

Prevention
  • Proper shots
  • EHV vaccine at 3,5,7,9 months of gestation
  • 4- way yearly booster for all horses
  • Strangles
  • Rabies
  • Potomac Horse Fever
  • Isolation of the mares after traveling
  • Prevents spreading

What about the 6 month Mare?
  • Begin EHV vaccination as soon as possible
  • Start at 6 months
  • Continue at 7 months and at 9 months
  • Isolation of the 6 month mare

Testing
  • Send in tissues
  • either the lung, spleen, liver, and adrenal
    glands are usually used to test for EHV
  • Virus detection
  • With a PCR or culture test
