Number of Juveniles that are enlisted in JPA in
October 2005
  • From a total number of 280 juveniles imprisoned,
    they attend
  • 60 Primary School
  • 115 Secondary School (Gymnasium and Lyceum)
  • 90 Other programs

The History of our School
  • How the vision became reality
  • Nov. 1994 The idea of a voluntary effort is
    formatting
  • Jan. 1995 A team of volunteers begins teaching
    in a single Correctional Facility in
    Athens
  • Sep. 1996 The action of this team is expanding
    to several correctional facilities

  • Sep. 1997 The first contact with the Juvenile
    Prison of Avlona (JPA) We are trying to
    help a single juvenile for the National Exams
    to pass to University
  • Sep. 1998 The team of volunteers is now
    teaching (tutorial lessons) 11 High school
    juveniles in JPA
  • Sep. 1999 The number of juveniles attending
    lessons is now 23. The idea of founding a
    School is formed

  • Sep. 2000 The first High School(Gymnasium) in a
    prison is now a fact. This School functions
    under the supervision of the Greek Ministry of
    Education
  • The teachers were Damianos P. (Mathematics),
    Papadimitriou
  • J. (Physics) both from the
    team of volunteers and Vlachou M. (Literature)
    Makri P. (Literature)
  • Sep. 2001 The number of pupils has doubled. The
    School supports Lyceum students by giving
    tutoring lessons besides the School programme as
    a branch of the Avlona Lyceum classes. The School
    begins several cultural activities

  • Sep. 2002 The number of the student population is
    still increasing, the school continues its
    cultural activities winning theatrical school
    contest prizes at National level
  • Sep. 2003 The school is re-founded as
    2nd Gymnasium Lyceum of Avlona
  • The schools curricula provide all the
    subjects of the three Gymnasium classes as
    well as the full Lyceum school programme
    (1st,2nd,3rd class of Lyceum vocational
    branch)
  • From Sep. 2004 until today The school is now
    functioning as a full time establishment and
    expands even more its extra-curriculum
    activities

the beginning of the school year 2004-2005.

Theatrical activities
  • A play that was written and performed by our
    students won
  • 1st local prize at the 9th theatrical school
    contest (among all schools of Athens, Attica)
  • 2nd nation wide prize (among all schools of
    Greece)

Our theatrical team participated in the 12th
National Cultural Contest 2006 with a play
inspired from their daily life. Their effort was
awarded by winning the 3rd prize among all
schools of the Attica region.

Communication with other Schools
  • We were visited by the 49th Secondary School of
    Athens and the students exchanged views and
    opinions on matters concerning current problems
    (drugs, relationships etc)
  • We co-organised a school festival with the 2nd
    Secondary School of Egio Achaia (which is 200 Km
    away from Avlona), with music, poetry and
    traditional dances

Sports activities
  • Inner school games (endurance, skill, football
    and basketball based events, etc)
  • We are preparing a football, a basketball and a
    handball team to participate in extracurricular
    games

Creation of a School Library
The generous offer of the Greek Publishers
Association, initiated by the Minister of
Justice, has increased the number of books listed
in our School library, which now reaches 1500
titles.
