The River

Brian Robeson

• Brain Robeson is a boy who had an amazing
  adventure in the woods. In the book Hatchet he
  gets left alone in the woods with just a hatchet.
  
• A couple of years had past and Brian was a
  teenager. One afternoon a man came to Brians
  house and asked if Brian would do the adventure
  again.

Derek

• Derek is the man who asked Brian if he would do
  his adventure again, but this time in front of
  Derek.
• Derek wants to learn how Brian stayed alive sooo
  long. Derek does find out how he did all these
  things but something happens to Derek and Brian
  and they have a new adventure ahead of them.

How They Survived

• Derek and Brian had to find shelter so they found
  a large tree that had fallen and made beds out of
  lots and lots of thin bark.
• They ate berries cooked fish that was over there
  fire that they had made with flint.

The New Adventure

• When both Brian and Derek were sleeping in the
  woods a thunder storm was going on. One second
  there was no lightning the next lighting was
  everywhere.
• When some lightning came from the ground it went
  through Derek and the radio for big trouble.
  Derek would not wake up but he was still
  breathing.

The Setting

• In the beginning Derek came to Brains house to
  show Brains mom were they were going.
• Derek and Brain lived in the woods near Canada
  for 2 or 3 weeks.

Derek's Problem

• When Derek would not wake up Brian found out that
  he was in a coma. Brian could not feed him and
  could not give him water.
• Brian knew that people can not go without water
  for 3 or 4 days. Brian looked at the map that
  Derek showed his mom. He found that there was a
  river near by and it lead to a trading post he
  thought it would take 48 hours to get to.

How Brian Saves Derek

• Brain starts to make a raft it would have been
  easer if he had a hatchet. But all he had was a
  pocket Knife so he found beaver tracts and they
  led to trees that had been bitten by beavers.
• He carries the logs to the water and ties them
  together with rope that he found in Dereks
  briefcase he tied Derek to the raft so he would
  not fall off the raft.

A Bumpy Ride

• When Brian started to go down the river he could
  not turn because the raft was heavy. So he just
  jammed into the bank every time he tried to
  turned.
• Brian Knew that he could not go to bed so he
  forced himself to stay awake.

So Close

• Brian had been on the river for 40 hours and he
  was just heading into the very very fast rapids.
  Remember Brian is on a raft with no protection.
• Brian saw a rock ahead and his raft was heading
  strait for it. Brian could not turn the raft and
  Boom.

The Hit

• Brian went flying into the air when he hit the
  rock. There was an underwater rock that you
  could not see so, that gave the raft a slight
  ramp to go off.
• Brian was almost out of breath and when he came
  up to get breath he saw the raft with Derek on
  it.

Derek Almost Gone

• Brian knew it was hopeless but when he saw a
  small sand bar in the middle of the river he knew
  that he would stay alive.
• The only way he could save Derek was if he swam
  through the swamp near by but if he did not make
  it through the swamp Derek and him would die.

Staying Alive

• Brian swam and the current got slower so if Brian
  got tired of swimming he would float. It was
  almost Dark and Brian knew that if he could not
  find Derek that Derek would die.
• On a sharp turn he saw something up ahead he swam
  closer and it was Derek laying on the raft and
  on his right was the trading post and there were
  people there that helped them.
