EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • Speaking of diversitysome local background
  • You are in Wales (not England!)
  • The Welsh have their own language(older than
    English)
  • Spoken by 20
  • Some people think I am speaking it..
  • but you are also in Britain, UK.
  • In a minute an overview of the summer school
  • but first a short cultural guide to Britain and
    Wales to prevent culture shock

6
EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • Stereotypes of the English
  • Competent but a bit cold
  • Stereotypes of the Welsh
  • Warm and friendly (but not incompetent!)
  • We will find out more about Welsh history and
    culture on Saturday
  • Day out to St Fagans (museum of Welsh Life)

7
EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • Stereotypes of the British
  • Always apologising
  • For the food (and warm beer)..
  • For the expense
  • For the weather
  • Also the (in)famous British sense of humour
  • Difficult to explain/analyse, but includes
  • Understatement
  • Irony (sarcasm) hence Summer ironic quotes
  • Self-deprecation, self-ridicule, unnecessary
    apologising
  • How to explain?? May be because of
  • The food, the expense, the weather
  • Self-handicapping!

8
EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • Stereotypes are also comparative
  • Reminds me of an old joke about heaven and hell
  • British, German, Italian French, Swiss
  • Hell is British cooks and/or organizers!
  • This is why diversity is a good thing!
  • To recap, organizers more Germans than Brits!
  • Nicole Tausch, Andrew Livingstone, Anja
Zimmermann, Martin Bruder, Caroline Leygue, Dina
    Dosmukhambetova, Jochen Gebauer, Joe Sweetman,
Sian Jones, Reem Saab, Verbon (diversity is
    good!)
  • Also why we leave the catering (mostly) to
    you(diverse tastes)
  • Tip When the weather/food/cost gets you down try
to develop a British sense of humour!

9
EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • To help you on the food ( drink) front
  • In your bag a guide to Cardiff with tips
  • Put together by our postgrads with cost and
    cuisine (diversity) in mind
  • Also tips for other places to go
  • Contact number of the postgrad(s) in your
    workshop
  • Designed to fall open on the where to drink
    page

    reasonably cheaply

  • Registration fee payments (sorry!)
  • By far the easiest for us is if you pay this in
cash, preferably in pounds (160) or else in Euros
    (200).
  • We will issue you with a signed receipt so you
can claim back from your University or
    Association (e.g. SPSP)
  • Sarah on the 6th floor (6.07) will collect this
    money and issue receipts
  • She is present from 10.00am to 14.00 each day
    (for Week 1 only)
  • So please pay as soon as possible, in Week 1!
  • Teachers can also collect and sign for their per
    diem expenses from Sarah

21
EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • Some final words of advice
  • Remember you are working with other people so
need to be a good team-player and perhaps make
compromises, be flexible, etc (not necessarily
    bad)
  • Not everyone can work on their ideal topic
  • So remember Diverse is good! Divas are bad!
  • Work hard but have fun!
  • To help the fun and galvanize the team-spirit we
    propose a a tee-shirt design competition to
capture the spirit of the summer school.
  • So if you find yourselves with any free time (!)
work on these designs (one entry per workshop)
and we will vote for the best one (no voting for
    your own workshop!).
  • Proposed deadline 14.00 Tuesday 26th, Week 2
  • Everyone will get a winning tee-shirt at the end

22
EASP Summer School, Cardiff
  • Finally
  • Although I am an organizer rather than workshop
teacher, I am very happy to meet with students
individually, or in groups, to discuss your
    research
  • I will try to get to all the posters
  • So let the games begin!
