The King
  • Most scorpion species only reach 2 to 3 inches in
    their adulthood
  • The longest of them all is the African Scorpion
    (Hadogenes troglodytes)
  • Reaches up to 8 inches.

7
What They Eat
  • Most scorpions consume insects, spiders,
    centipedes, and other scorpions.
  • Larger Scorpions eat vertebrates, such as smaller
lizards, snakes, and mice if they are able to
    subdue them.
  • They capture their prey with their pedipalps,
paralyzing them with their venom as well if
necessary. The immobilized prey is then subjected
to an acid spray that dissolves the tissues,
allowing the scorpion to suck up the remains.

8
Also Eaten
  • Scorpions are also prey
  • Many types of creatures hunt scorpions for food
  • Centipedes
  • Tarantulas
  • Insectivorous Lizards
  • Birds (especially owls)
  • Also Mammals
  • Including Shrews
  • Grasshopper Mice
  • Bats

9
MATING
  • During mating season, the male performs a type of
    dance with the female.
  • He grabs her pedipalps with his own and drags her
across the ground until he locates a preferred
    place to deposit his spermatophore.
  • Then that is drawn up into the female's genital
pore, near the front on the underside of her
    abdomen.
  • Some species' courtships include a sexual sting
of the female by the male.

10
Momma and Her Babies
  • Gestation period is several months to a year
  • Mother has 24 to 35 young
  • When they are born, she carries them on her back
    for two weeks
  • Then they will be strong enough to go on their
    own.
