North Korea
  • Development plan based on
  • ½ population compared to S. Korea
  • 60 population concentrated in Pyongyang
  • In preparation for reunified Korea, must build a
    compatible infrastructure
  • Same interests as South Korean youngsters in
    online gaming - Internet cafés
  • Fiber optic cable connected with
  • China, but limited access
  • Low number of landline phone
  • ratio (12 of S. Korea)

32
North Korea
  • Investment on communication infrastructure
  • Wireless communication - 1.5 billion
  • 1998, S. Korea invested total of 3 billion in
    mobile communication
  • From population ratio, N. Korea will need to
    spend 1.5 billion
  • Wired communication infrastructure 7.5 billion
  • Neet 7.1 million landlines total, currently 1.1
    million
  • Approximately 75 of S.Korea landlines supplied

33
WiMax Network Projections
  • E Katz
  • D Labunsky

34
Wireless Network
  • Central hub supports multiple users using
multiple applications, mostly Internet and VoIP
    telephony

35
Assumptions
  • Assume that the major differences between WiFi
    and WiMax are
  • Software
  • Power levels allowed (ERP)
  • This implies that most of the hardware required
for a WiMax network will eventually be priced
comparably to that required by a WiFi network
today, with the exception of antennae and some
    physical infrastructure

36
More assumptions
  • We will limit our analysis to the last mile
network, i.e. we assume local availability of
  • Power
  • A high place to put the antenna
  • Some high bandwidth internet access (i.e. fiber
optic, satellite ground station, WiMax Backhaul,
    etc.)
  • Customers wanting internet service will need
computers. We do not require high performance,
however, and could easily make do with obsolete
    systems, donated by industrialized nations

37
Access Point
  • Assuming WiMax CPE will be priced comparably to
    WiFi equipment available today
