    Communities

Project Schedule
  • Draft EIS to NIRB fall of 2007
  • If permitting is complete by mid 2009, then
    mobilization can begin summer/fall 2009
  • Construction can begin fall 2009 and be complete
by winter 2011. The port site could be
    operational by summer 2011
  • Road operations could then begin February 2012

6
Land Ownership
  • The project will occupy

  • Contwoyto camp 2 ha
  • 82.3km of road ( quarries) 141 ha
  • Crown Land 370 ha
  • Port site camp and airstrip 159 ha
  • 128.9 km of road (quarries) 211 ha

Project Operations
  • Summer shipping season
  • Fuel and supplies delivered to Kitikmeot
    communities by barge during summer.
  • The all weather road would operate in winter
only, between January and April, to deliver fuel
and supplies by truck to mines in Nunavut and
NWT. Trucks would be both captive to the project
and also come from the South as necessary.
  • Water use is for domestic purposes only. No
industrial wastes, sewage would be treated for
    disposal.

8
Shipping
  • Independent studies have shown that the route to
the proposed port site is suitable for vessels up
    to 50,000 tonnes
  • Vessels are allowed to enter Canadian Arctic
waters as long as they comply with the Arctic
    Waters Pollution Prevention Act.
  • Vessels must meet Canadian standards.
  • Fuel and supplies would be shipped from eastern
Canada or offshore into Bathurst Inlet during the
open ice period, mid-July to mid October, (approx
90 days, similar to the shipping at Polaris and
    Nanisivik Mines).
  • Icebreaking will not be required to extend the
    season
