3About the project
- During a period of a couple of weeks, we have
been working on our book project. We were
supposed to read books and make a presentation
out of it. Our group on four have split in two,
and we have read the two books Naiv. Super and
Volvo Lastvagnar. We choose these two books,
because they was written by the same author and
deals with the same issues and the same absurd
world. We are going to talk about the two books,
explain the main plot, and then compare them. We
hope to give you a insight in Norwegian reading
culture and our society and specially in these
two books, society problems.
4Erlend Loe
- Erlend Loe was raised in Trondheim, the same
place he was born in 1969. He is was trained in
Cand.Mag. With a basic course in
peoples-mind-science. Later he was also trained
in writing movie scripts at the Danish School of
Movies in Copenhagen. - Loe never decided to be a writer, even if he knew
that was what he really wanted. He has now become
a great writer and he has won a lot of diffent
prizes. He has gotten really great critics all
over the papers, and I think he is the writer
most youths have heard of in Norway right now. - Loe had his debut in 1993 with his novel Tatt av
kvinnen, - Taken by the woman. But his real
breakthrough came with his book naivSuper in
1996. After that he has written a lot of
childrens books, novels and even movie scripts.
Among his movie scripts there is one that stood
out Detector, it became an immediate blockbuster
when it got to the movies in 2000.
5Here is a list of all the books Erlend Loe has
written

- 1994 Maria José
- 1993 Tatt av kvinnen (Taken by the woman)
6Naiv. Super
- The book is about a young student who suddently
falls into the middle of an existentional crises
after a defeat in crocket against his brother. He
breaks out of his regular life, skip his
education and borrows his brothers apartment.
There he spend his time playing and reflect over
things he like and dislike. The scenario is
described with ironi and naivity, with a longing
for his lost childhood.
7Volvo Lastvagnar
- In this novel we meet Andreas Doppler with his
small company on the walk through the woods. The
little company consisting of Doppler, his son
Gregus and the elk calf Bongo ask for shelter by
an old hag called Maj-Britt. There is a lot of
strange things going on at Maj-Britts place, and
Doppler keeps finding new aspects of himself all
the time. Here you get to know (among other
things) why the book is called Volvo
Lastvagnar, and what it is. After a couple of
days, Doppler gets in contact with Maj-Britts
nabour and bitter enemy von Borring. Von Borring
is just as old as Maj-britt. Hes got a passion
for birds and sleeps outside the hole year. In
this place Doppler is getting reborn as a better
and healthier person. - In this fabulous and absurd novel, Erlend Loe
shows his incredible talent as a writer, and
brings up a lot of serious society issues. The
main message in the novel is (by our opinion) a
criticism to todays materialism.
8Erlend Loes view
- Erlend Loes view on human beings, feelings and
how todays community has developed is presented
to us within the two books Naiv. Super and
Volvo Lastvagnar. - We get close up to the main characters and their
way of living and thinking. Behind it all we
learn about separate peoples loneliness and their
way of handling it. - The books tell us a lot about Erlend Loe, and his
personal view. We learn about his critics to
todays society and the way it has developed. - Material is in focus and no one cares about human
values. Erlend Loe tries to present these society
problems and how they result in loneliness and
confusion.
9Equalities between the books
- The equalities between the two books are several.
- Not only thinking about Loes way of writing, but
also the themes, the characters and the humour he
is using. Exactly these factors are the one that
makes the books stand out from the regular
meaning of life genre. - Agents like repeating and using a simple language
are being used. It might, sometimes, be a bit
much, but at the same time it underlines the
character and the way the person feels and acts.
It points out the important themes we all handle
in different ways deep inside. - The main characters are living descriptions when
it comes to deep emotional feelings like
loneliness, love, the pressure to succeed and
meaning about life. The characters are proves to
these community questions and since everything
are presented so simple and ordinary, in an
absurd way, we recognise ourselves in it. - Everything is simple, childish and many things
have no point at all, just like us. We meet
taught and we get to know a strong confusion. - The new type of living, the material lifestyle
and its troubles. - The norwegian community are being present to us
in a new angle. Absurd views, livestyles and
taughts underlines the point.
