The Laughing KookaburraWe are wondering what
makes the kookaburra unique?
By Anna and Emely 2003
2
Where can we find this unusual animal?
The kookaburra can only be found in the open
forests, and bush lands of eastern Australia from
the northern tip of Queen land down to Tasmania.
The Laughing Kookaburras form community groups
that share and defend their home territory. The
kookaburra is threatened by the continued cutting
of trees. The introduced starling is taking over
the nesting ground in hollow trees.
3
What does the kookaburra look like?
The laughing kookaburra is a member of the
kingfisher family. They are 42-45 cm long. It has
a short thick body with a very large head with a
dark mask over its eyes. The feathers are brown
on the upper parts, a white collar, with a creamy
white underbelly and It has pale blue wings,
brown tail and is barred black. When it flies it
has a white band across its wings

What does the kookaburra eat? What eats the
kookaburra?
The kookaburra is a carnivore or meat eating
animal. It flies from a perch to pounce on its
prey. It likes to eat things like small reptiles,
most ground-living insects, as well as mice, and
it slurps snakes up like spaghetti! After
catching prey, the Kookaburra pounds it against a
tree branch or rock, probably in order to
tenderize the meat. The Kookaburra doesn't drink
any water it gets enough water from the food it
eats.
5
How does a kookaburra take care of its babies?
Laughing kookaburras do not build nests instead
they use existing holes in trees or sometimes a
tree-termite mound to raise their young. They lay
1-4 white eggs. The female and any unmated young
bird that are 4 years old or younger .The young
bird are called helpers incubate these eggs for
about 24 days.
6
How does the kookaburra communicate?
The kookaburra communicates by making its famous
laughing calls, shrieking and chuckling sounds.
This helps the kookaburra tells other birds to
stay away and is also used to call other
kookaburras. A loud laughing made by a group of
these birds is to claim their territory. They
mark this territory with their calls, but they
will also physically defend it from other bird
species.
7
What makes the kookaburra unique?
The kookaburra is unique because it is 1 of 10
kingfishers species. There are only 2species of
kookaburra that live in Australia, the laughing
kookaburra and the blue-winged kookaburra. The
Australians are proud of this funny bird that
they put it on a coin!
