PORIFERA (SPONGES)

• Filled with holes called pores.
• Filters microscopic food (bacteria) and
  (protists) from the water.
• Spikes help support the body.

CNIDARIANS

• Carnivores
• Have stinging cells at the end of their
  tentacles.
• Have specialized tissue (muscle, nerve)
• Polyp- looks like a bowl - hydra, sea anemone,
  coral
• Medusa-looks like an up side down bowl -
  jellyfish

WORMS

• Invertebrates
• Long narrow bodies with no legs
• Tissue, organs, and organ systems- simplest
  organism with a brain
• Flatworms-most are parasites that obtain food
  from their host ,their flat Ex planeria,
  tapeworm
• Roundworms-Maybe the most abundant animals on
  earth ,cylindrical bodies, have a one way
  digestive system (2 ends),round and have no legs
  Ex hookworm
• Segmented worms-Ex earthworm, leeches,
  segments,one way digestive system,closed
  circulatory system

MOLLUSKS

• Most have hard outer shells
• Invertebrates
• Have a mantle- a thin layer of tissue covering
  their organs
• Most have a foot
• Soft unsegmented body
• Ex Gastropods- stomach foot- snails, slugs
• Bivales- 2 shells- oysters, clams, scallops,
  mussels
• Cephalalopods- head -octopus, cuttle fish,
  nautilus and squid

ARTHROPODS- CRUSTACEANS

• 2-3 body sections
• 5 or more pair of appendages
• 2 pairs of antennae
• Live in water or damp places
• Undergo complete metamorphosis
• Ex crabs, crayfish, barnacles, shrimp, krill
• General characteristics- invertebrates, external
  skeleton, segmented body, jointed appendages
  (wings, mouthparts, and legs)

• No antennae
• Live mostly on land
• Ex spider, mites and ticks

• Ex sea star, sea urchin, brittle stars, and sea
  cucumbers
