Tropical Life
  • Squirrel Monkeys live in the tropical rainforest
    of South America . Squirrel Monkeys prefer the
    upper part and lower part of a forest.
  • Squirrel Monkeys like high trees but can
    sometimes be found on lower ground of a forest.

Group Size
  • Squirrel Monkeys group sizes are around 23-54
    monkeys each. 
  • The number of adult males that can be in a group
    is only one!
  • Other monkeys move between groups sometimes.
    Different Squirrel Monkeys live in different
    habits, and they breed seasonally.

Red-Backed Squirrel Monkeys
  • The smallest primate weights up only 2.2 pounds.
    This primate is called the Red-Backed Squirrel
    Monkey.
  • The Red Backed Squirrel Monkey is known by the
    gray cap and reddish, saddle-shape marking on its
    back.

  • The conmen Squirrel Monkey has a darker cap with
    reddish body.  Although these species are
    naturally separated they look extremely alike and
    share the same behavior.

  • For more then a decade, it was thought to have
    become wiped of the planet until it was
    discovered in 1996.
  • Convincing evidence now proves that they are
    still living and are rooming around in the South
    American region.
  • These spices of Squirrel Monkey are quiet smart.
  • Not only did they survive the time when dinosaurs
    vanished on this earth they also survived cold
    winters.

What Do They Eat
  • Squirrel Monkeys eat mainly fruits and some
    insects but they also like to eat leaves and
    small animals like mice and other rodents. 
  • The first hour or so of the day they spends
    searching for fruits and insects as a snack. 
  • Then they search high and low for more food.  Not
    only are they smart they work very well as a
    group.

Body Built
  • All of types of Squirrel Monkeys are about
    12.5 inches long not including their tails which
    are about 16 inches. 
  • Squirrel Monkeys have a slim flexible built
    bodies with a short grayish coat and bright
    yellow legs.
  • Their tails often curls over one shoulder when
    they are resting.

  • They have 36 teeth and the males have upper
    canines. Squirrel Monkeys have nails like us
    instead of claws like all other primates.  
  • These monkeys are called nervous primates because
    when they get frightened they act very nervous. 
    They are also the smallest primates in the world
    that we know of.
