- SMS Text Messaging
- Part of Adelaide Hills 'Busy People _at_ the
Library' program which promotes online access to
its library services. - Time saving rather than a cost saving measure.
Many Hills residents work in the city area and
can pick up items on their way home. - Currently only reservation notices sent via SMS.
Overdue notices with fines attached are more
complex.

- How is it done?
- Spydus Library Management System is configured to
provide an interface to an emailsms service such
as Telstra's OnlineSMS - The library purchases OnlineSMS's from Telstra -
quantity equals savings in costs - Already configured to send email notices, the
system then sends SMS messages through the email
parameters onto Telstra OnlineSMS and then to the
borrower's mobile phone number and email address

- Notices are generated as part of regular notice
generation in overnight 'housekeeping - To activate the service, the customer's record
requires - SMS typed in front of mobile phone number
- An email address
- Delivery notification method set to 'E' for
email

and an email that advises title of item, pickup
location and date 2B picked up e.g. 'Please pick
up reservation for The Magnificent Seven from
Stirling Library by 22/8/03' - Customers can reply to their message which goes
to an library nominated email account which is
checked regularly by staff. - Messages that 'bounce' also 'bounce' back to
these nominated account generating a printed
notice instead which asks for new number or email

- Main Factor - number of phone black spots in the
Adelaide Hills - Selected Capsat - multidirectional satellite dish
- Protection of Capsat - fitted on hydraulic lift
fitted to the cab which raises and lowers
automatically with the stairs - Capsat dials into the Internet via a MPDS
satellite service provided by Xantic which gives
full internet access to customers - Connection also takes staff through a VPN setup
to Council and into the Library Management
software

eighth year. - Open to residents of SA, it is organised by
Martin Johnson, poet and arts organiser with the

- In a world first, an exciting new initiative,
Books in the Sky (BiTS) - Bypasses cassettes or CDs
- Creates a potentially cost-effective,easy-to-use
digital solution to the provision of books,
magazines and newspapers to people with sight
impairment - Currently trialed by clients of the Royal Society
for the Blind SA and customers of the Burnside
Library.

- Potential to revolutionise services and
eventually replace talking books on cassette tape
and CD. - Two major components of the BiTS system are
- the Audio Navigator - a portable audio playback
device - Content Management System - a suite of
applications and hardware,that manages the
wireless delivery of content through broadband
satellite.

- First significant advance in providing books,
magazines and newspapers to sight-impaired people
in a simple to use and potentially cost-effective
way. - BiTS has attracted interest from traditional
publishing and distribution channels worldwide
including BBC, BBC Radio 4, ABC, ABC Audio Books,
The Fairfax Group, The Talking Newspaper
Association (UK) and the Royal National Institute
for the Blind (UK).

- Installation of adaptive technology into Julia
Farr Centre for use by residents. In
collaboration with Julia Farr Foundation to put
in large touch screen, track ball, adaptive
software for use of internet etc for disabled
residents. - "Multiversity" program - celebrating cultural
diversity
