Title: LIVING HISTORY

1
LIVING HISTORY
  • IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME!

2
MAKING HISTORY COME ALIVE
  • As a result of having a living history
Plattsburgh Depot at the NCTRC, teachers will
have the opportunity to dovetail the
cross-curriculum approach of living history by
    implementing social, military, economic,
geographical, and cultural factors that shaped
our history with their students. Using the
materials available through the depot, teachers
can create moments for their students, keeping
the differentiated learning approach in mind.

3
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
  • Kinesthetic/tactile
  • Take frequent breaks
  • Move around or stand up while learning
  • Use bright colors or highlight reading materials
  • Listen to music while studying

4
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CONTINUED
  • Visual
  • Use visual materials such as pictures, maps,
    charts, graphs, flashcards, etc.
  • Sit toward the front of the class to avoid visual
    obstruction
  • Take notes or ask teachers for handouts
  • Study in a quiet place away from verbal
    disturbance

5
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CONTINUED
  • Auditory
  • Read text or flashcard aloud
  • Use a tape recorder during lectures
  • Study with a friend
  • Create musical jingles to aid memorization
  • Submit work as oral presentation or on an
    audiotape

6
LIVING HISTORY EDUCATION FOUNDATION
  • The living history depot based at the NCTRC will
be available to educators from all walks of life.
Elementary and secondary educators, as well as
special education, art, and technology will find
this hands on depot useful. However, teachers
completing any courses offered by the LHEF will
be able to make the items available at the depot
most applicable. Please see following website for
    further details. http//www.livinghistoryed.org/
Successful participants will have the opportunity
to apply for a Living History Kit to use with
their students and colleagues based on funding
    availability.

TURN KEY
  • Thanks to the alliance between the NCTRC and
LHEF, many educators in the North Country have a
chance to utilize a depot stocked with 10,000
dollars worth of equipment. In respect, all of
the equipment will be together, stored within the
NCTRC and in good working order.

12
TRAIN THE TRAINER
  • Due to the ongoing PDE program at Plattsburgh
State I had the opportunity this summer to
experience a chance of a lifetime. I was able to
participate in several Living History courses,
and now have a wonderful chance of becoming a
trainer to the many educators who decide to take
advantage of the NCTRC depot. The NCTRC will be
offering classes to those teachers who had the
chance to participate in one of many courses
offered by the LHEF. The particular train the
trainer classes will provide me the opportunity
to put my experience with living history to good
use. I will be able to help those educators who
want to bring a hands-on approach to their
classrooms a head start on how to utilize the
equipment available through the depot. The
pictures on the following slides are a testament
to the experience I have acquired and am willing
to share with those who want to take advantage of
    it.
