The Great Awakening
  • Church attendance decreased in the eighteenth
    century. To gain larger congregations the
    Puritans compromised their views. Spiritual
    decline in all religions.
  • Religious revival was necessary in the 1730s and
    40s.
  • Ignited by Jonathan Edwards in Mass. Most
    preachers used demagoguery and scare tactics as
    they warned their followers of the hellfire and
    damnation of sinners.
  • Touring ministers like George Whitefield inspired
    many through revivals and traveling churches.
  • Created new centers of higher learning, inspired
    missionary work, and broke down denominational
    lines.

Chapter 8 Highlights Ending the War
  • A Peace Treaty in Paris in 1783 brought an end to
    another world dispute (156). Thanks to Franklin,
    Adams, and Jay who disobeyed an order by the
    Congress which was subservient to France for
    their help in the war.

    Florida.
