Title: Street Mission's China Trip A presentation on the feasibility of this idea A proposal
1Street Mission's China TripA presentation on the
feasibility of this ideaA proposal
2The Vision
- To provide a unique experience for a selected
group of adult youth who might not have the means
to source this experience themselves - To learn first hand about travelling in an
interactive fashion - For the selected group to learn more about
themselves by interacting with another culture
3The trip proposal
- To take 10 - 12 homeless (2 aboriginal youth and
one aboriginal supervisor) or at risk youth on a
life changing trip to China for 2-3 weeks as
part of a rehabilitation program. Age group
approx 18-24. 4 or 5 volunteers will join them as
supervisors. These will be support workers who
are volunteering their time. - They will tour places like the Great Wall, the
terracotta Warriors, visit people on the land and
engage with students at one of Shanghai's
Universities on cultural exchange. - To share and interact with local countryside
people in their day to day lives, to make
contrast between the kids lives and the lives of
the ordinary Chinese worker and hopefully gain
insight into how lucky they are.
4Benefits to Street Mission from the trip
- Long term goal a stepping stone towards the
Brat camp Youth Refuge - the block of land in
the countryside where we can have a drug, smoking
and alcohol free environment, with basic
accommodation, similar to Father Riley's camp
(that focuses on animals) but with a focus on
sport and recreation, like bush walking, soccer,
basketball, table tennis, camping, fishing,
swimming and much more. With the aim of
rehabilitation from drugs and alcohol so they can
be better prepared to re-enter society. - Short term goal raise the profile of Street
Mission and the youth, drug and alcohol problem,
to help with future fund raising efforts, so Alan
does not have to stand at Chatswood and Hornsby
due to his debilitating arthritis. - A move away from a fund-raising effort to a
front-line organisation that directly helps the
homeless and under privileged. - The first step was the Street Mission Café, the
second step is the Drop in Centre and beyond Alan
possibly is the Brat Camp Youth Refuge. - A process to ensure that this organisation
continues regardless of what happens to Alan.
Self funding.
5Benefits to the Youth from the trip
- Be in a drug and alcohol free environment to help
with rehabilitation - Be occupied productively with the goal of
changing their lives - To provide an opportunity to travel, to learn
about other cultures - To learn about themselves through the medium of
another culture - To experience first hand world renowned icons in
history
6Why China?
- It is a place close to Alan's heart. Particularly
the Great Wall. He believes that when the kids
see it they will have a sense of wonder and
achievement of this man made object and relate it
to their own lives what can be achieved if you
put your mind to it. It is easier to give them
the experience of the Great Wall than
Kilimanjaro. - His wife Hui comes from there and is prepared to
do much of the ground work involved in planning
the trip through her knowledge of the language
and contacts overseas - Alan has previously been there with his soccer
group and they had a very successful trip with
the local university there and the hospitality
shown to them. It is an experience he would like
to share with others
7Airfare donated or discounted
- 18 20 Economy return tickets Sydney to
Shanghai. - The travel time within the year will be
determined by the airlines availability of unused
seats in off-peak season. - If we can't get donated tickets Hui is sure she
can get discounted tickets through a contact.
8Planning for the trip
- Drawing from the experience gained from the
soccer trip of 2000 and in consultation with
Hui's and Tania's contacts in this area we can
put together a good itinerary for the tour. - This year a window of opportunity is open for us
to travel in late October and early November when
air tickets are cheaper due to no holiday period
in both countries. - Next year March prior to Easter holidays.
- We welcome constructive suggestions from the
Street Mission committee and other committees
regarding the whole trip.
9Insurance and liability
- Alan has contacted AON for travel insurance we
have a price of 1725 for 15 people, which works
out to approx 120 per person. - AON have emailed us to say that we are covered
for association liability under our existing
policy.
10Where will the youth come from?
- From the charities currently involved with Street
Mission - The Burdekin Association, Street Work,
Manly Community Centre and Youth Reach. - Father Riley's Youth off the Streets and other
youth organisations if numbers fall short. - Alan is happy to talk to Bill Crews who he knows
well known Church leader in Ashfield and radio
host. Radio 2GB on Sunday nights to ask other
organisations to participate in the program.
11The selection process
- We will have a careful selection process
- The onus is on the charities to select suitable
candidates to minimise the potential risks to
Street Mission and the selected youth, taking
into account how long they have been off drugs,
previous relapses, behaviours, background,
attitude towards life in general, towards others
etc. - Is this program going to benefit this client?
- It must be mutually beneficial to each party
involved i.e. The kids, Street Mission and other
organisations. - The kids must sign a contract stating that they
will not purchase, distribute or take drugs on
the trip and also we can use pictures, sound and
video of them in a documentary or otherwise.
12Publicity
- One of the aims of the trip is to generate
positive publicity for the Street Mission
organisation and to highlight the drug and
alcohol problem facing our society. - This is through newspapers, radio, television,
internet websites news reports and a
documentary. - Perhaps a daily report on SBS, in the SMH
complete with pictures, or at least the Manly
Daily and Cumberland newspapers.
13Sponsors
- To help fund the trip corporate sponsors will be
called for to donate money. Our volunteer
Veronica is approaching the corporate sector. She
will be handling this area. All monies and goods
donated are tax deductible, the company donating
will be well publicised throughout the trip via
our media coverage. E.g. through video,
documentary, photos, newspaper articles, internet
etc. - We have already approached seven airlines for
tickets - Perhaps local churches and groups with some
interest in what we are doing. - Local businesses
- Logos to be advertised through T-shirts and other
associated gear. - Kids to be sponsored for every kilometre they
walk the Great Wall.
14Cost
- Airlines to donate or provide discounted tickets
- AUD25,000 30,000 estimated cost inclusive of
food and accommodation plus airline tickets.
Return tickets roughly AUD600 -1000 per person.
Hui calculates this through her regular travels
to China. She rarely pays over AUD1000 per
ticket. - AUD100 per person per day for meal,
accommodation, transport, tickets etc. AUD1
5.8RMB. Average cost per meal is AUD2 if you go
to local supermarket. - Besides Veronica approaching the corporate sector
for money, clubs such as the RSL's, Rotary, Star
City will be asked for money. - Purpose fund-raising for this trip ideally a
sub committee. - This will be funded from private and corporate
donations and will not come from Street Missions
regular income source - Alan's money collection.
15Follow-up
- Provided it all goes according to plan and is a
real genuine benefit to the people we select, we
should endeavour to make it an annual event. - We will do follow-ups to judge the positive
effect on the client through objective surveys
and meetings to gauge the success of the project.
