Childhood Obesity
HOW?
  • In a study involving 14 other industrialized
nations, children from the United States were the
    most likely to be overweight.

16
Among 13-year-old boys in the U.S., 12.6 were
overweight.Among 13-year-old girls, 10.8 were
overweight. That number grows for
15-year-olds--13.9 of boys are overweight and
15.1 of girls are overweight.
17
Causes of Childhood Obesity
  • Genetics
  • Diet
  • Environment
  • Inactivity!
  • Excessive time spent watching television, using
the computer, and playing video games is partly
to blame for the escalating rate in obesity.
Children, on average, spend up to five to six
hours a day involved in these sedentary
    activities.

18
Dangers of Obesity
  • Low self-esteem
  • Depression
  • Increased risk of Type II diabetes, also known as
    adult onset diabetes
  • Increased risk of high blood pressure
  • Trouble with bones and joints
  • Sleep disorders

19
Impact of Obesity on Learning
  • Due to low self-esteem, not likely to participate
    in large groups
  • Hesitant to take risks or accept challenges
  • Unable to take constructive comments
  • Due to increased health risks, may be lethargic,
    unable to focus
  • Increased absences due to illnesses

20
HOW?
  • Use of Computers exposes you to
  • Electromagnetic fields (EMF)
  • The effects of exposure are
  • Brain Tumors, Leukemia, Birth Defects,
    Miscarriage, Chronic Fatigue, Headaches,
Cataracts, Heart Problems, Stress, Nausea, Chest
    Pain, Forgetfulness, Cancer, etc
  • Where do EMFs come from?
  • All sides of computers and monitors.

21
WHAT ELSE??
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).
  • Caused by Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
  • Debilitating, painful, requires treatment up to
and including the use of steroids and surgical
    correction.

22
IS THAT ALL??
  • Eye Strain Conjunctivitis
  • Strain of focusing causes headache and fatigue,
also dryness and redness of the eyes.
  • Causes nearsightedness.
  • It is poor distance vision also called Myopia
  • Glasses and contact lenses.

23
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION??
  • It is increasingly important to encourage
children to become more active. Limiting computer
and television screen time can be important first
steps to encouraging children into a more
    physically active lifestyle.

24
WHAT IS THE SOLUTION??
  • Stay away from Computers as far as possible.
