Tet Offensive
  • The Tet offensive was a three-phase military
    campaign between January 30 and September 23 1968
    by the combined forces of the National Front for
    the Liberation of South Vietnam and the Peoples
    Army of Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
  • The purpose of this operation was to strike
    military and civilian command and control centers
    through out South Vietnam and to spark the
    uprising of the population that would destroy the
    Saigon government, which would end the war in a
    single blow.

Martin Luther Kings Assassination
  • Martin Luther King was one of the main leaders
    during the Civil Rights movement.
  • He was a minister and he lead the Montgomery Bus
    Boycott and also helped found the SCLC.
  • King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis
    TN. where he was to lead a march of sanitation
    workers protesting against low wages and poor
    working conditions . He was shot in the neck as
    he stood on a hotel balcony and died in hospital
    soon afterwards.

Robert F. Kennedys Assassination
  • Robert Kennedy was a United states senator and
    brother of John F. Kennedy.
  • His assassination took place a little after
    midnight on June 5, 1968 following the
    celebrations of a successful campaign in the
    Californian elections whilst seeking the
    Democratic nomination for President of the United
    States.
  • The perpetrator was a 24-year old Jordanian
    immigrant named Sirhan Sirhan, who assassinated
    Kennedy as a result of Kennedy's stance towards
    Israel.
  • Sirhan remains incarcerated to this day for this
    crime.

1968 Democratic National Convention
  • The 1968 Democratic National Convention of the
    Democratic Party was held at the International
    Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, from August 26
    to August 29, for the purpose of choosing the
    Democratic nominee for the 1968 U.S. presidential
    election.
  • 1968 had already been a rough year for the United
    States, with the assassinations of Martin Luther
    King Jr. in April, and Robert F. Kennedy in June.
  • The convention achieved notoriety because of
    clashes between protesters and police, and the
    generally chaotic atmosphere of the event.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference
  • The Southern Christian Leadership Conference
    (SCLC) is an American civil rights organization.
  • SCLC was closely associated with its first
    president, Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • The SCLC had a large role in the American Civil
    Rights Movement.
  • The origins of the Southern Christian Leadership
    Conference lie in the Montgomery Bus Boycott that
    began after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing
    to give her seat on a bus to a white man.

Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
  • The SNCC was one of the principle organizations
    of the American Civil Rights Movement in the
    1960s.
  • It emerged in April of 1960 from student meetings
    led by Ella Baker held at Shaw University in
    Raleigh, North Carolina.
  • SNCC played a major role in the sit-ins and
    Freedom Rides, a leading role in the 1963 March
    on Washington, Mississippi Freedom Summer, and
    the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party over the
    next couple years.
  • Later the SNCC focused on black power, and then
    started protesting the Vietnam War.
  • In 1969, SNCC officially changed its name to the
    Student National Coordinating Committee to
    reflect the broadening of its strategies.

Sit-Ins
  • A sit-In is a type of protest where one or
    persons nonviolently occupy an area for protest.
  • In a sit-in, protesters usually seat themselves
    and remain seated until they are removed, usually
    by force, or until their requests have been met.
  • Sit-ins have been a highly successful form of
    protest because they cause disruption that draws
    attention to the protest.
  • A Sit-In is also a form of a nonviolence protest.

Freedom Rides
  • The Freedom Rides were inspired by the 1947
    Journey of Reconciliation, led by civil rights
    activists Bayard Rustin and George Houser.
  • Civil Rights activists called Freedom Riders rode
    in interstate buses into the segregated southern
    United States to test the United States Supreme
    Court decision Boynton v. Virginia.
  • The first Freedom Ride left Washington D.C. on
    May 4, 1961, and was scheduled to arrive in New
    Orleans on May 17. Riders were arrested for
    trespassing, unlawful assembly, violating state
    and local Jim Crow laws.
