Title: Rising Trend in Paediatric Trampolinerelated Injuries'

1
Rising Trend in Paediatric Trampoline-related
Injuries.
  • Jensen C, Sandhu S, Jarman R
  • Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, UK

2
Aims
  • Guidelines published by Royal Society for
    Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)
  • Gather accurate local data of trampolining
    injuries in children
  • Analyse trends
  • Identify high risk groups and injury patterns
  • Compare with last year

3
Methodology
  • Study period
  • Same 5 week period in 2004 and 2005
  • Population
  • All children presenting to an urban district
    general hospital Emergency Room
  • Data collection
  • All trampoline-related injuries in this population

Discussion
  • Statistically significant 5 fold increase in
trampoline related injuries in 2005 compared to
    2004
  • Many injuries may have been avoided if patients
    followed safety advice of RoSPA
  • No children under the age of 6 allowed
  • Discourage difficult jumps without qualified
    trampoline coach present
  • No more than one child on trampoline at a time

9
Discussion
  • No difference in daily sunlight times in the two
time periods (p0.042) so fair to compare figures
  • Limbs most frequently injured
  • Small numbers in 2004 limited further conclusions
    being statistically significant
  • Dependant on trampoline injury being documented
    on the AE notes

10
Summary
  • Statistically significant 5 fold increase in
    trampoline related injuries
  • Need for the public to heed the advice of RoSPA
  • More detailed prospective analysis of trampoline
related injuries in the UK needed (with larger
    numbers)
