WHAT'S WRONG WITH GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD?
  • Crops which have been Genetically Modified to
    produce pharmaceuticals can contaminate the food
    supply.
  • Crops which have been Genetically Modified to
    resist insects kill not just the "target insect"
    (such as the borer or weevil) but beneficial
    insects (such as the Monarch butterfly). They
    also threaten the habitats of other animals, such
    as birds.
  • Genetic material inserted into plants can
    transfer to animals and humans in the intestinal
    wall
  • The nature of genetic modification and long term
    effects are not well understood as these products
    have not been properly tested before being
    released into the environment. For example, in
    the USA, the United States Department of
    Agriculture (USDA) approved the use of all
    currently approved Genetically Modified crops
    based on data supplied by the manufacturers

  • Toxic compounds such as glyphosate (RoundUp) and
    Bromoxynil are used on Genetically Modified
    crops. The US Environmental Protection Agency has
    approved the use of Bromoxynil despite
    acknowledging "...serious concerns about
    developmental risks to infants and children."
  • The use of Genetically Modified seed encourages
    dependence by the farmers on a single seed
    supplier and may involve the purchase of both the
    seed and herbicide from one supplier. Seed
    companies impose 'licensing agreements' for the
    seed which forbid the farmer from replanting seed
    from one year to the next.
  • Genetically Modified plants may crossbreed with
    wild species to produce "superweeds", which
    cannot be eliminated using standard herbicides.
  • Crops which have been Genetically Modified to
    contain their own insecticide, such as Bt, cause
    insects to become resistant to the insecticide.
  • Crops which have been Genetically Modified to
    resist herbicides encourage the use of larger
    quantities of herbicide, with the effect that
    both weeds and beneficial plants are killed
    indiscriminately.

BT, SAFE OR UNSAFE?
  • BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), offers corn
    producers a powerful tool in managing corn
    borers. The insecticidal protein is produced
    within the corn plant and helps to protect the
    plant.
  • All tests currently done on BT have been funded
    by companies who produce and sell BT
  • Bt corn and non-Bt corn crop residues equal in
    grazing value.

  • In 2000, Star Link, a genetically modified
    corn that contained a pesticide and was not
    approved for human consumption, was found
    processed into taco shells and other products.
    The discovery resulted in sweeping recalls and
    lawsuits from farmers and grain elevators.
  • Many plants were taken and a lot of seeds taken
    and grown out in the lab and sprayed with
    herbicide, and DNA tests done on it, and the
    results are not being made public. I feel that
    should be made public." Quoted one farmer who
    discovered the first super weed. Its DNA tests
    were done and found the weed to be resistant to
    Roundup, Liberty and Pursuit chemicals.
  • A study found that two kinds of pesticides
    fungicides and the herbicide Roundup were linked
    to statistically significant increases in birth
    defects. To make Monsanto's "Roundup ready"
    seeds legal, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
    (EPA) had to triple the amount of Roundup
    residues that it allows on crops.
  • The release of 'Frankenstein foods' into the
    world's supermarkets was based on flawed
    experiments which failed to confirm their safety,
    official U.S. government papers have revealed.
    'It could lead to the generation of unintended
    and unpredicted toxins, cancer causing agents,
    allergens and other substances. The FDA had
    approved GM tomatoes later sold as paste in the
    UK despite tests showing that rats fed on them
    had developed 'erosions' in their intestines.
