Title: Heart Disease

1
Cardiovascular Diseases
  • Heart Disease

2
The most common kinds of heart disease are
  • Arteriosclerosis(hardening of the arteries)
  • Hypertension or High Blood Pressure
  • Rheumatic Heart Disease
  • Congenital heart disease(heart disorder that is
    present at birth)

3
Arteriosclerosis
  • DefinitionA term for the condition of thickening
,hardening and loss of elasticity of blood vessel
walls. Characterized by fatty deposits on the
inner lining of the blood vessel walls.
  • Signs and Symptoms Symptoms are not always
evident until severe blockage occurs. Pain or
cramping while exercising or blood clotting may
    occur.
  • CausesBlood vessels lose elasticity with
age.Build up of fatty deposits on blood vessel
    lining.
  • TreatmentThe best treatment in arteriosclerosis
is prevention. When it becomes severe doctors
have to treat the complications themselves.

4
Hypertension
  • DefinitionThe more blood your heart pumps and
the narrower your arteries the higher your blood
    pressure.
  • Signs and symptoms excessive perspiration-muscle
    cramps-weakness-frequent urination-rapid or
    irregular heartbeat-nervousness and jitteriness
  • Causes this can not always be determined.
Sometimes it is due to medications or other
    diseases.
  • Treatment Recommendations to change
    lifestyles,Sometimes medications are prescribed
    to lower the blood pressure.

5
Congential Heart Disease
  • Definition A heart defect that is present at
    birth.
  • Signs and symptomsIn severe cases at the birth a
problem is noted. In other less severe cases the
child may appear to be lethargic have trouble
breathing and show signs of fatigue that are
    unwarranted.
  • Causes It is not easy to pinpoint why a birth
    defect happens.
  • Treatment In many cases surgical procedures are
required soon after birth to correct the defect
to insure the life of the child. Some procedures
are repairing the arterial switch, adding a shunt
    or shunting procedures,balloon valvuloplasty,pulmo
nary artery banding and venous switch or intra
    atria baffle.

Rheumatic Heart Disease
  • Definition A condition resulting from having
Rheumatic fever as a child. ( weakening of the
    heart valve)
  • Signs and SymptomsDamaged heart valve which can
progress into serious even a disabling condition.
  • CausesA disease process that begins with the
    untreated strep throat infection.
  • TreatmentPrevention is the best measure to be
taken. Treat strep throat infections with
antibiotics so it does not progress into
    Rheumatic Fever.
