The Royal House of Thebes
  • Purpose- My purpose for presenting is to inform
    about what I read.
  • Introduction- I read chapter 18 , The House of
    Thebes. This chapter consists of 4 shout stories
    inside. Im going to talk about each one of the
    chapters like who was in them and what happened
    with that person.

I. Cadmus and His Children
  • A. Cadmus younger sister, Europa, was taken away
    by a bull.
  • B. His father wanted her brought back
  • 1. Cadmus and his brother were not to come back
    without her. 2. Instead of looking for her, he
    went to Delphi to ask where she was.
  • C. The god told him not to look for his sister,
    but to found a city of his own.
  • 1.The city of Thebes was founded after Cadmus
    fought and killed a dragon by a river, that
    killed people that came to get water.
  • 2. He married Harmonia and had four daughters
    and a son.
  • D. His daughters, Semele, Ino, Agave, and
    Autonoes, all had misfortunes.
  • 1. In the end the family moved away to get away
    from the bad luck, but it still seemed to follow
    them.

II. Oedipus
  • A. King Lauis was told by a prophecy that he was
    going to be killed by his son.
  • 1. When his son was born he had him put on a
    hill to die.
  • 2. King died with his attendants by what he
    thought was a stranger.
  • B. Oedipus is told that he would kill his father.
  • 1. A man named Oedipus left his country of
    Corinth, where he was known as the son of the
    King Polybus.
  • 2. Apollo fated that Oedipus was to kill his
    father.
  • 3. He traveled to Thebes to get away from the
    king so that the oracle wouldnt be right.
  • C. The Sphinx is guarding the outside of the
    country.
  • 1. Oedipus has to answer a riddle from the
    Sphinx.
  • 2. The riddle is, What creature goes on four in
    the morning, two in the noon day, and three at
    night.
  • 3. Oedipus tells her that the answer is man. As
    a baby they crawl, as they get a older they learn
    to walk on twos, and when they become old people,
    you walk with a cane.

II. Oedipus (continued)
  • D. Oedipus marries his mother, Jocasta, and
    becomes king.
  • 1. After the Sphinx was killed, Oedipus becomes
    king.
  • 2. A black plague comes over Thebes and will
    only leave if the person who kills King Lauis is
    punished.
  • 3. Teiresias tells Oedipus what happened and
    how he killed his father when he was on his way
    to Thebes.
  • 4. The man he killed with his servants was his
    father.
  • 5. Then a old man came to tell of how he was
    supposed to kill Oedipus because there was and
    oracle that told of how King Lauis was to be
    killed by his son.
  • 6. Oedipus blinded himself in the end and his
    mother killed herself from hearing what happened.

III. Antigone
  • A. Oedipus had two sons and a daughter with his
    mother.
  • 1. Polynieces, Etocles, Antigone, and Ismene
  • 2. Oedipus resigned from the throne and was
    later thrown from Thebes, by his brother-in-law
    Creon, Jocastas brother, with the consent of his
    sons.
  • 3.Oedipus moves to Colonus where he dies and is
    buried.
  • B. Etocles, the youngest brother, becomes king
    and Polynieces doesnt like that.
  • 1. Polynieces creates an army with the king of
    Argos.
  • 2. Thebes and Argos fight, finally they decide
    to let the brothers battle it out.
  • 3. Both brothers end up killing each other and
    no one wins.
  • C. Creon becomes king and doesnt want Polynieces
    buried because he feels that Polynieces started
    the whole thing.
  • 1. Antigone goes against Creon and buries
    Polynieces.
  • 2. She was killed for doing so.
  • 3. Ismene is the only child left and the royal
    family was no longer remembered.

IV. The Seven Against Thebes
  • A. The mothers and sons of the five chieftains
    that marched with Polynieces, wanted them buried,
  • 1. Creon didnt want those who started the war
    to be buried.
  • 2. The family members went to Theseus, King of
    Athens, to ask if he would talk to Creon about
    them being buried.
  • B. Theseus mother talked him into going to
    Creon.
  • 1. Creon still said no and Theseus warned him
    that if they were not buried they would have to
    fight.
  • 2. Creon still said no, so Athens marched
    against them and won.
  • C. The five men were buried, but their sons
    werent happy because their family members were
    not buried earlier.
  • 1. Ten years later, the sons marched against
    Thebes.
  • 2. They were victorious and the Thebans left.
  • 3. They ground was leveled and all that was
    left was Harmonias necklace.

The End !!!!!!
  • My chapter was really a family timeline.
    Everyone was a distant relative to the people in
    the story before them. I enjoyed reading this
    chapter and now know much more than I did about
    Greek Mythology.
