What is an analogy?
  • An analogy is a comparison between two different
    things in order to highlight some point of
    similarity.
  • Analogies are all about figuring out how things
    go together or are relatedlike a mental puzzle.

  • Think THIS is to THAT as WHAT is to WHICH?
  • Like this CAT is to KITTEN as DOG is to PUPPY

Types of Analogies
  • Object/Function relate an object and the purpose
    for which it is used
  • CHAINSAW TREE - the purpose of a chainsaw is
    to cut down trees.
  • Type one stem word names a category into which
    the other typically fits
  • BANANA FRUIT - a banana is a type of fruit.
  • Part/whole the first word is part of the second
    word
  • PETAL FLOWER - a petal is part of a flower

  • Location words describe a typical location or
    event at which the other word can be found.
  • CAR GARAGE - a car is typically parked in a
    garage
  • Synonym words that have similar meanings.
    SMELL SNIFF - smell is the same as sniff
  • Antonym Words that have opposite meanings.
  • SMILE FROWN - smile is the opposite of frown
  • Lack one noun describes something that the
    other noun, by definition, lacks
  • DROUGHT WATER - a drought involves a lack of
  • water

  • Cause and Effect one word is an action, result,
    or situation that the other word creates or
    stops.
  • BANDAGE BLOOD - the bandage stops the flow
  • of blood
  • Degree describes a thing or state of being and a
    second thing or state of being that is similar
    but smaller or larger in size or degree.
  • POKE PUNCH - A poke is a much weaker touch
    than a punch

  • Characteristic Action relate something and what
    that thing (or being) typically does.
  • DOCTOR SURGERY- a doctor characteristically
    performs surgery
  • Characteristic Use one word is a person or
    thing and the other is what that person or thing
    uses.
  • PALETTE PAINTER - a painter uses a palette as
    part of his job
