Title: Project: Daedalus Suborbital hybrid rocket program

1
Project Daedalus Sub-orbital hybrid rocket
program
  • University of Central Florida
  • Department of Mechanical, Materials, and
    Aerospace Engineering
  • Students for the Exploration and Development of
    Space (SEDS-UCF)
  • Friday, February 13, 2009

2
Project DaedalusSub-Orbital Hybrid Rocket
Program
  • The primary objective of the project is to become
the first independent student group to design,
successfully launch, and recover a suborbital
    sounding rocket.
  • In the long run, Project Daedalus is in an
effort to provide a low-cost, reusable launch
vehicle for scientific research projects and
provide for future university scientific studies.
  • One of the largest amateur rockets and amateur
    rocket motors ever built.

3
Our Team
  • Team consists of about 75 interdisciplinary
    engineering students in UCFs CECS.
  • One of largest university projects currently
    undertaken in the United States.
  • Split into four divisions
  • Propulsion and Motor Systems
  • Structures and Mechanical Systems
  • Electronics and Communications
  • Launch Systems and GSE

4
Design of Launch Vehicle
  • About 25 Feet Tall
  • Booster-Dart Design
  • Carry a Scientific Research Payload
  • Motor consists of a Hybrid Rocket Motor
  • Onboard video, telemetry, data recording, and
    recovery systems

5
Launch
  • NASA Wallops Flight Facility
  • Daedalus III late Summer / early Fall 2009
  • Estimated 250,000 feet
  • Daedalus IV January/February 2010.
  • Estimated 350,000 feet

  • COTS Approach
  • In-House Assembly
  • In-House Testing Design
  • Power Vehicle
  • Control Mission Events
  • Record Transmit Data
  • Modular System
  • Abilities
  • Record Data
  • Acceleration, Temperature, Pressure, Video
  • Transmit Data
  • S-Band (2.2MHz)
  • Control Mission Events
  • Launch
  • Staging
  • Recovery
  • 100cm in Length
  • 14.25cm Outer Diameter
  • 7075-T6 Alloy
  • Allows for Dual Mounting
  • Modular Design

8
Propulsion and Motor Systems
  • Hybrid Rocket Motor
  • Nitrous Oxide as oxidizer
  • HDPE as solid-fuel
  • Production of ¼ scale test motor, full scale test
    motor

9
Propulsion and Motor Systems
  • Daedalus III Motor
  • Initial thrust 26153 N
  • Average thrust 17435N
  • 40 second burn
  • 160 kg propellant mass
  • 7.7 kg/s mass flow
  • Based upon 250,000 target and 75 deg. launch
    angle
  • More complete aerodynamic analysis of launch is
    needed.

10
Launch Pad Design
Ground Support and Equipment
  • Working with Wallops to get launcher
    specifications
  • Design will be a retrofitting of the rail system
  • Transportation
  • Ground Support
