3
VSO is an international development charity that
works through volunteers.
4
Our vision is a world without poverty in which
people work together to fulfil their potential.
5
VSO Background Key Facts
  • VSO is the largest independent
    volunteer-sending agency in the world.
  • Since 1958, we have sent out more that 30,000
volunteers in response to requests from our
    overseas partners.
  • At the moment we have around 1,500 people
working in placements in these regions.
  • We currently work in 34 countries.
  • The average age of a volunteer is 38.
  • We recruit from 6 international bases.

6
Where does VSO work?
7
Fundraising at Accenture
  • Matching fund
  • 100 per employee per financial year
  • Senior Executive Donations
  • Some SEs invest a percentage of their salary
into a charity account. This can be allocated at
    their discretion.
  • Other ad-hoc opportunities
  • Community event nominated charity
  • Project dress down days
  • Using colleagues to support

8
Accenture Dos and Dont
  • Do
  • Feel free to ask your colleagues to sponsor you.
  • Ask your colleagues to support your efforts in
terms of bigger fundraising events (e.g.
    community events).
  • Speak to Paul Gurney about any internal
    communications opportunities and big ideas.
  • Go check the Corporate Citizenship portal and go
    through the correct channels.
  • Use your common sense!
  • Dont
  • Email Senior Executives you dont know
  • Use company email distribution lists (you need
    permission!)
  • Dont see Accenture and your colleagues as the
    primary means of raising money.

9
  • VSO and Accenture have been working in
    Partnership since 1999
  • To date, weve sent over 118 Accenture volunteers
through the Volunteer Business Partnership scheme
  • These volunteers have been recruited from UK,
    USA, Canada, Netherlands and Germany.
  • Aside from volunteering, in 2006 the Accenture
    Corporate Citizenship Foundation directly
    championed VSOs Secure Livelihoods development
    goal
  • Also in 2006 a pioneering group of Accenture
employees went on the first VSO overseas trek to
climb Kilimanjaro. Setting an incredible target
    of 120,000 to beat.
  • In 2007 88 trekkers from 9 different countries
will climb Kilimanjaro on one of 4 treks and the
UK group may yet beat the 2006 total.

Why fundraise?
VSO needs YOUR help
Raising money
Raising awareness
11
VSO Challenges Worldwide
  • VSO overseas events have been running for 7 years
  • Since starting events participants have raised
    over 1.6 million

12
The 2008 Everest Base Camp Challenge
  • Set up by Accenture employees to undertake a
personal challenge and raise money for education
    in Nepal
  • Why fundraise?
  • The education programme in Nepal
  • VSO volunteers in Nepal
  • Progress is being made
  • The future

13
Top tips
  • Be original
  • Keep it simple
  • Get support
  • Know about VSO
  • Be confident
  • Have a plan

14
All the advice given (about how to go about
fundraising) was relevant, START EARLY mainly
because you never know what other commitments
will escalate to prevent progress. Involve as
many people as you can in the effort going it
alone makes it more difficult, takes more time
and is a lot harder. Ariam Asghedom Accenture

15
Gift Aid
  • You can make your fundraising worth almost a
third more with no extra hard work!

Gift Aid is what VSO can claim from the Inland
Revenue and is the tax that your sponsors have
already paid through their wages and income.
Gift Aid equals 28p in every 1 i.e. 10 donation
Gift Aid 12.80
16
GIFT AID
The Rules
  • You CANNOT Gift Aid your own donation
  • You CANNOT claim Gift Aid from a company
  • You CANNOT claim Gift Aid from family
  • Any person who is a UK tax-payer MUST complete a
sponsorship or Gift Aid form in their OWN
    handwriting
  • We must receive the declaration at the same time
    as the money

17
Online fundraising
  • It is quick to set up and easy to use
  • People donate more
  • People can pledge, and money is committed so
they dont have to pay up until after the event
  • Gift Aid is calculated automatically (and counts
    towards your fundraising total)
  • You dont have to handle any cash
  • You can post your own photos, and updates of how
your preparations for the trek are going
  • Dos and donts

Tips from participants
Smartie tubes filled with 20ps were great for
longer term donations from a range of people
15 per tube donated!
Start early, be creative and dont be afraid to
ask others to help you. 2 people raised 1200 for
me and it made all the difference. They know
people you dont, and it helps to spread the VSO
word.
20
