Unit II Part CCaring
  • Julie E. Davis BSN, RN

2
  • Let us each all realize the importance of our
influence on others-stand shoulder to shoulder
not alone in a good cause.
  • Florence Nightingale

3
What is Caring?
  • Responding to others as unique individuals
  • Sensing the emotions of others
  • Accepting others for the way they are
  • Makes a connection w/ another human being
    breaks down alienation

4
Holistic Nursing
  • Caring for the whole person all the
ramifications of that person (i.e. family,
    significant other or pet)
  • Pays attention to all aspects...body, mind,
    spirit
  • AKA transpersonal caring

5
Dr. Jean Watson High Touch VS High Tech
  • High Touch-focus is on the interpersonal aspect
    of nursing caring
  • High Tech-focus is on utilizing nursing skills
equipment necessary to save ones life
  • A good nurse should be using both

6
Caring in Nursing Medicine
  • Profession of modern nursing is only about 100
    years old
  • Nurses have historically had to concede to
physician ( still do in many ways)
  • Subservience has been inherited by nursing
  • Caring is the overwhelming characteristic that
    differentiates nursing from medicine

7
Caring Your Colleagues
  • Sometimes nurses are unkind to one another
    often eat their young
  • Recognize the possible reasons behind their
    behavior (i.e. insecurity)
  • However, caring nurses are everywhere...seek them
    out learn from them

8
Caring Your Patients
  • Most of the time, what patients/families need
most is for someone to hear them
  • Sometimes the best nursing skill you can possess
is the ability to listen to hold a hand
  • Refrain from dehumanizing your patients
  • Do NOT judge them or be unkind because of their
    past decisions

9
Caring Includes Everyone!!!
  • Every single human being deserves your respect
the highest level of nursing care that you can
    provide to them!
  • You can think what you wish on your own
time...but while on duty you will practice in a
professional manner, which does not allow for
    discriminatory practices.
