Korean Folk Village
The Korean Folk Village is home to numerous
collections of Korean cultural artifacts,
providing an opportunity for Korean children to
experience and learn the culture of their
ancestors firsthand. The site provides a venue to
promote traditional Korean culture to both
domestic and international visitors, and provides
an open-air learning place for succeeding
generations. The village has been developed to
convey the wisdom and the spirits of our
ancestors to both domestic and international
tourists.   The lifestyle of Korean people,
with a history extending back more than 5,000
years, abruptly changed following the Kabo
Peasant War (1894), the Japanese invasion of
Korea (1910-1945), and the Korean War(1950-1953).
When the Korean economy surged in the 1960s, the
Office of Cultural Properties started to value
the establishment and operation of a folk museum.
The economy, society, and culture in Korea
underwent a tremendous change in pursuit of the
Saemaeul Movement (movement for regional
development), promoted nationwide in the 1970s.
During this period, the government, influenced by
the Foreigners' Tourism Promotion Policy, formed
an advisory council on January 15, 1972 to
research the establishment of the Korean Folk
Village. Accordingly, the Korean Folk Village was
founded on May 8, 1973, and the privatization of
the Folk Village was officially approved by the
government on September 18, 1973.

Pyoseon Folk Tourism Complex
Folk culture of a nation is the spirit of its
people. It transforms and adapts to the age and
environment and is transmitted through
generations.Its elements and characteristics are
added or partially or even wholely omitted as
time goes by. In that, folk culture is specific
lifestyle and fundamental culture containing the
spirit and ideasof the people. Organized
systemically, the Jeju Folk Museum has folk
materials unique to Jejusince the 1890s, the late
Joseon Kingdom. Up to 100 different traditional
Korean houses have been almost perfectly restored
by carrying the stones, pillars, and other
components from real Jeju houses where people
used to live. About 8,000 pieces of folk
materials such as household utensils, farming
implements, furniture, and stone items are on
display.
Udo Island
Udo Island is an island located off the
eastern shore of Jeju Island. It is called Udo
because its shape resembles that of a cow that is
lying down or sticking out its head. The
circumference of Udo Island is 17km and there are
about 700 houses and 1800 residents who live
through the means of farming and fishing.
Udo Island is the biggest island among the many
islands that surround Jejudo Island. Its lands
are fertile, it has abundant fishing farms, and
is a great place to visit. Udo Island can also
give you the impression that you are seeing a
miniaturized Jeju island when you see the women
divers, stone streets, stone tombs and very
similar traditional culture and natural
environments. If you go to the top of island,
Udobong Peak, you can see the entire island of
Jeju including Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (a famous
spot for sunrises).
