  • Agenda
  • Who are we now?
  • The Market
  • Myths
  • Possible Solutions
  • Available Assets

3
Combined assets of Intelsat and PanAmSat . . . . .
  • 51 satellites
  • 8 teleports global fiber connectivity
  • 56 points of presence in 37 cities around the
    world.

4
Market Summary
  • DoD predicts that by 2010, as much as 1/3 of the
U.S. Military strike force will be UAVs. (OSD)
  • Presidents budget for UAS included 262.8M (OM)
    for UASs in 2007.
    (OSD Unmanned Aircraft Systems Roadmap,
2005-2030 - does NOT include supplemental)
  • UASs will account for 1 billion in operations
funding between today and FY2011. (Air Force
    Magazine Online)

unmanned vehicles will become an increasingly
important advantage for U.S. forces on the
battlefield of the future and will play a major
role in transforming the way the United States
wages war. (Whitehouse.gov)
5
Commercial Myths
  • Build and they will come.
  • The bandwidth will be there.
  • The market will react.

Missions will be held or modified based on
UAVS availability. (U.S. Army Operational
Assessment)
6
What to do?
  • Long term commitments
  • Forecasts
  • Gamble
  • Unique solutions
  • When the combatant commanders listed their top
50 capability gaps for the Fiscal 2006 budget
    process, 54...were capabilities that are
currently, or could potentially be, addressed by
    UASs. (Air Force Magazine Online)

7
Benefits of Inclined Orbit Capacity
  • Operational cost reduction of 25 - 40
  • Entire spacecraft can be repositioned and
dedicated to meet specific mission requirements.
  • Steerable Ku band spot beams can be directed to
    specific requirements.
  • Frequency and bandwidth constraints are more
than an impediment, they are operationally
hindering the commanders ability to fight.
    (Army PM-UAVS Brief AUSA 2006)

Intelsat Ku Inclined Orbit Today
  • Galaxy 4R _at_ 77W over CONUS.
  • Intelsat 603 _at_ 340E has available capacity in
    East Spot beam over ME.
  • Intelsat 602 _at_ 150.5E has coverage of Korea,
Japan, Hawaii, 72MHz 150MHz transponders and
    steerable spot beams.
  • Intelsat 605 _at_ 174E connects CONUS to PACRIM and
also has 72MHz 150MHz transponders and
    steerable spot beams

Intelsat Inclined Orbit Tomorrow
GXR CONUS
  • Galaxy 10R _at_ 129W over CONUS, includes Alaska.
  • Intelsat 601 _at_ 47.5E will have coverage of
    Europe, ME and SWA.
  • Galaxy 11 will be available for dedicated lease
    over CONUS in Q408.
  • Intelsat 801 with coverage of Europe, Africa,
Middle East, and Southwest Asia will be
avaialable for a new role in Q109.

Take Aways
  • Demand for Unmanned Systems requiring wideband
SATCOM is increasing - and DoDs budget is not
    likely to keep pace.
  • We got lucky this time
  • Current and mid-term Inclined Orbit assets and
Hosted Payload arrangements have the potential to
    help resolve this issue.
